Sullivan Says Carlson's 'Brilliant Writing' Has Turned Into 'Racist Demagoguery'
The Dish actually transcribed the entire Obama speech - Carlson's massively hyped "scoop" yesterday - in June 2007. You can read the speech in full here. What struck me at the time was the following quote:
We can diminish poverty if we approach it in two ways: by taking mutual responsibility for each other as a society, and also by asking for some more individual responsibility to strengthen our families. . . . Yes, Obama defended government programs - to help young mothers with infants, for example - but the speech's blend of conservative goals and liberal policies is almost Obama's centrist brand. Yes, he implied that in many inner cities there is a constant quiet riot and that the authorities tolerate things there they wouldn't elsewhere (sounds like Giuliani to me). He also implied that the Feds did not respond to Katrina with sufficient urgency in part because the people affected the most were black and powerless. Isn't that obviously true? If Katrina had hit Georgetown, or San Francisco, do you think residents would be on their roofs begging for federal help for days? Yes, in black audinces his cadence shifts a little. So fucking what? All that Carlson did is clip it to get an "angry black man" in the minds of Americans. It's at once one of the most desperate and lame and vile plays of the race card I can remember - an obvious recognition that the 47 percent tape can only really be countered emotionally with race-baiting . . . When it comes to racial demagoguery, the right has become everything it says it hates about the left. Carlson used to be a brilliant writer. He's now a racist demagogue. He's a story in one person of how degenerate and disgusting much of American "conservatism" has become. read: http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2012/10/the-decline-and-fall-of-tucker-carlson.html

1. Sullivan is correct, but he fails to note that he was a huge contributor to the disgusting

degeneration of so called 'conservatives' in America. He was one of the worst name calling mudslingers when he was cheering for the Iraq invasion and drooling over Dick Cheney's quaifications and indulging in horrid rhetoric against those who protested that invasion. He paints himself as an innocent bystander to the fire he helped set, so willingly, so easily, so fully. Carlson is one of Sully's own kind, his own Party, his own side. The both of them helped steer us toward that murderous and fruitless invasion, now Sully wants to pretend he was out there protesting, not echoing Carlson and other right wingers.

Without arguing individual motives and efforts of folks like D. Frum, A. Sullivan - and others, like A .Fleisher and J. Goldberg, who've criticized their party's ineptness or tone to some extent - it's transparent from their clinging to their party identification and support for republican candidates that the only thing they actually decry about their party is that they seem to be losing ground and losing elections with every unapologetic, divisive appeal - with every divisive, elitist policy they promote. . . . don't let the timid ones fool you. All they really wish for is that all of the blatant and open racism, bigotry, homophobia, sexism, xenophobia, corporate love, and greed that has always under-girded republican victories was, somehow, put back undercover - out of public perception - and that their party would get back to devising and employing those clever codes and whistles that masked their most fervent motivations to divide and conquer. http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021361641 |

2. when was Tucker a brilliant writer?

I've seen Tucker on TV since he was about 4 years old, and this latest from him seems to me like exactly the kind of thing he does.
