Rep. Todd Akins (R-MO) Senate campaign has struggled to rebound after his claim that women could not get pregnant from legitimate rape led to a drop in fundraising and GOP establishment support. A new recording released by his opponent, Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), wont do much to help him. In the recording, taken in May, Akin suggests that the best way to get his attention is to make a donation to his campaign.
An unidentified man asks Akin for advice on the best way to get in touch with a congressman, asking should we write them a letter? Akin dismissed the idea and suggested cash might be more attention-grabbing:
AKIN: Im in a three-way primary for the US Senate. Ive gone to people and asked for their support, their help, or their endorsement, and some people say yes. They write me a decent check. I remember that. The people that I thought were friends that tell me to go away because they are supporting someone else, I remember that. You know, I can remember back to 12 years ago. You remember whos helping you. Thats one way that people get to know congressmen and senators.
The telling exchange was recorded by a member of the Missouri Democratic Party. Akin has been scrambling for decent checks. On Friday, he reportedly agreed to support an earmark ban in the Senate favored by the Senate Conservatives Fund in exchange for the super PACs fundraising help. Akins last chance to drop out of the race will expire Tuesday.

Just when you think Akin is as disgusting as he can get, he outdoes himself.

(14,524 posts).. to say out loud, what the majority of us already knew to be the case?
I would refrain from getting too damn self-righteous about this, it's been common knowledge for a very long time that people with the large cash to "donate" get preferential treatment from politicians.

This should go on all of McCaskill's advertising.

(20,453 posts)... Akin's memory is directly proportional to the amount of money going into it's real estate... Got it!
Let's light this one up and get this fucking Bozo off the bus.

(34,179 posts)The sad fact of today's politics is that those who donate the most money do get preferential treatment from those same politicians. It's been this way for years and decades, all Akin is doing is being honest.

(251 posts)I live in Missouri's 2nd congressional district. I received a dismissive canned answer from him that for me was the turning point for being an independent voter to being a Democrat.
The subject I wrote to him about was something really important to me. If I had only known I had to include a decent check with the letter to get his attention...

(37,157 posts)Yeah, you'd think someone in that position would have the bare-minimum sense to at least erect the facade of decent constituent service, but sometimes these guys are just such basic bottom-feeding grifters they can't be bothered to put on a fake smiley-face.

(14,177 posts)Or do we have to take Romney's word that he is an unwelcome member of the Comedy Tour? I vote he is part of the tour and he should be on the bus, not on the roof or under it, but on it right besides Ryan, not Romney he is flying in, but on the bus nonetheless.
The Republicans say they are the party of facts and honesty, but run like roaches when they are exposed to the light. So, in that respect, I appreciate Akin's honesty and that he doesn't run from the truth no matter how ugly it is.

(251 posts)I would hope it is to drop out, but it's probably just a ploy to get more free airtime and say he is staying in the race.
