Univision forum: Romney demanded to bus in supporters - Threw a tantrum over the show's introduction

How Romney Packed The Univision Forum

Tense moments as the campaign demands to bus in supporters and to retape an introduction. A little bit of disrespect, complains Univision's Salinas.

MIAMI, Fla.

When the Republican took his place Wednesday night in the first of two back-to-back candidate forums televised on the mega-network, he was greeted by an adoring, raucous crowd that cheered his every word, and booed many of the moderators' questions. The next night, President Obama was treated to stone cold silence from the audience as he was aggressively grilled on his lackluster immigration record . . .

. . . the enthusiasm gap may have been an optical illusion formed by a series of last-minute demands by the Romney campaign, according to Maria Elena Salinas, one of the Univision anchors who moderated the forums.

Salinas told BuzzFeed that tickets for each forum were divided between the network, the respective campaigns, and the University of Miami (which hosted the events) and she said both campaigns initially agreed to keep the audience comprised mostly of students, in keeping with the events' education theme.

But after exhausting the few conservative groups on campus, the Romney camp realized there weren't enough sympathetic students to fill the stands on their night so they told the network and university that if they weren't given an exemption to the students-only rule, they might have to "reschedule."

The organizers relented. One Democrat with ties to the Obama campaign noted that Rudy Fernandez, the university official charged with coordinating the forums, is a member of Romney's Hispanic steering committee. Fernandez did not respond to BuzzFeed's questions about whether he gave preferential treatment to Romney's campaign.

In any case, Romney's team was allowed to bus in rowdy activists from around southern Florida in order to fill the extra seats at their town hall . . .

4. "Apparently, he was just a little sunburned."- Salinas replied to a question about Romney's soul-glo

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Anyhow.....

"He used the same makeup person I use, and we asked her if he requested darker makeup," Salinas said. "She said, 'No he didn't request anything.' Apparently, he was just a little sunburned."

After all that fakery and buffoonery Romney did, the Romney aide and network says everything was fair and square, no preferential treatment given, says Romney was an ace while he answered questions with RW talking points, Obama greeted with icy stares, etc. blah-blah while he answered some really tough questions.

This woman and the Romney aide just gave 2 conflicting stories.

And anyone catch this? Obama camp gave away tickets to students, etc. and there were no-show seats that had to be filled but Romney camp sent in a bus load of frothing turds that made huge amounts of noise.

8. One thing cannot be denied: The GOP knows how to bully...

...and evidently, some folks know how to cave.

If you let 'em, they'll push you to the ground. And stand over you.

10. I think we may well have missed an opportunity

I wonder if the Obama campaign knew of Romney's antics before the President's appearance.

11. Don't know, but a precedent was set when "young toughs" harassed voter officials...

in Florida during the Gore-Bush "recount." They just kept yelling, husslin' and threatening; the officials cowed and left any meeting room when these punks were there. Both occasions, they came outta S. Florida.

12. good analogy

I was waiting that month for Democrats to show up and raise an even bigger fuss, but we fizzled out in the end.

I'd like to see us get pissed and demonstrate, en masse, against republicans. We never seem to get that singular focus down, tho . . .

9. As a Latina

Living in Florida can tell you tge Spanish radio. And television is being m
Bombarded by Romney ads. If someone here knows or has ties to the Obama campaingn please remind them that Latinos are not only mexicans and or cubans. There are a segment of us coming from different Latin countries who don't identify with neither of them.

We want Obama to fight harder. His voice is not being represented fairly in our market. Please let the Obama campaign know joe garcia is not enough. He cant be in 6 radio stations at the same time. He needs to have MORE Latinos in Florida to counter attack the massive wave of negativity republicans have going on.
