I now have a few FORMER FB friends...

who have been 'calling me out' so to speak on mutual friends' walls. When I told one HE was part of the 47%, he said he wasn't. He brags about "getting all of his money back" at tax time. In fact, he brags about his write offs all the time

He called me a welfare queen, and said that *I* was responsible for this 47% (no offense to anyone who needs help, but I am not on welfare and I've never been on unemployment a day in my life. I am not on disability or any other gov't program for that matter, but that doesn't mean I don't think our safety net should be stronger.)

I called him a mooch.

He said he works, he pays taxes (sic), he is a 'job creator' (lol) and wants to know in who's world does that make him a mooch?

"Mitt Romney's world"

mooch.

Also, you cannot argue with someone like that. To keep your blood pressure down, I'd avoid this dude entirely.

I thought FB was lame, and I resisted participating in the social networking sites, until I saw how they figured into the so-called Arab Spring.

Since I joined, I've made contact with old friends I hadn't heard from in 30 years. I used to go on tour with rock bands in the '70s. People have posted pics of me focusing stage lights for Little Feat, hanging out on the tour bus etc. I had never seen the pictures before, and they are priceless to me now. Ah.....the memories.

I've hooked up and traded pics with nieces and nephews and cousins that I have never even met. It's great.

I love Facebook now!

Old photos are great and so are old friends at least till they start spewing nonsense and showing off their cats.

If you are old and past worrying about your future employment Facebook is great but if you are a young person you are taking a serious risk posting anything on Facebook.

It works for what I use it for. I have had some RW douches on my friends list, but I took care of that. They are gone. My FB experience is far better now.

I find it incredibly creepy. I dont think i have seen more ignorance collected in one place anywhere else on the net. Well maybe freeperland but aside from that....

Not saying you see the same things I do but I barely ever go there and every single time I do I regret it.

YMMV

I have DU, TPM, Think Progress, Mother Jones and others similar that I read on FB. With family and friends, it's great to keep up with everyone. We share family photos, chat, and so on. Plus, I don't say anything if I don't feel like it. I don't feel obligated to like or respond to everything family and friends post.

Still, it all depends on how you use it. Sure, if you don't care about what gets on your FB page, you're going to get a lot of RW racist crap. It used to be that way for me, but I did a bit of unfriending and started doing a better job of managing it.

This makes for a better experience and I'm not getting inundated with some of the awful crap that sometimes permeates it.

Facebook is just another tool. It's up to the user to know how to manage it to suit his or her tastes.

I enjoy Facebook because it keeps me in communication with people I love at our mutual convenience in very busy lives.

There's a myth that facebook and other social networking sites are good places to discuss politics except that a recent study showed that facebook users only listen to their "close" friends who are usually of the same political opinion. The study suggests that facebook does affect voter turnout but it's unknown whether that means more democrats or republicans.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/13/us/politics/social-networks-affect-voter-turnout-study-finds.html?_r=0

"...The study, published online on Wednesday by the journal Nature, suggests that a special “get out the vote” message, showing each user pictures of friends who said they had already voted, generated 340,000 additional votes nationwide — whether for Democrats or Republicans, the researchers could not determine."
