I'm getting all the info via twitter because, of course, the US news is only covering a tape of Pres Obama from 1998, but here's what's been up.
Protesters have surrounded the Serena Hotel, which caters to Americans and other westerners. They are demanding all the Americans in the hotel be handed over to them.
Meanwhile, other protesters want to go to the embassy and set it afire. Latest reports suggest that helicopters are in the air above the diplomatic zone and firing on protesters.
The Pakistani police have fired tear gas and live rounds on the crowd in attempts to get it to disperse.
Crowd reports range from 1000 to 20,000, so we don't have a real idea about how widespread this is.
ETA: New report...
"4 police checkposts set ablaze, 42 policemen injured, military choppers over Diplomatic Enclave"
