Useless news:To Wear or Not to Wear White After Labor Day, That is the Question

Head clearing moment before returning to kicking Mitt's butt!

Everyone often wonders the question come September; Why can't I wear white after Labor Day? But nowadays, the no white after Labor Day rule seems to be a figment of fashion's past.

To Wear or Not to Wear White After Labor Day, That is the Question - 5 'How to' Rules

No one seems to know where the origin of this timeless no wearing white after Labor Day rule came from, but it continues to plague us year after year.

A few years ago, Time published an article about the moratorium of white past Labor Day, delineating the possible reasons why this urban legend of a rule was created. The main reason for the white rule seemed to come from early 20th century American, when many well-to-do city dwellers would summer in homes outside of their metropolis abodes, dressing in light, white fabrics to stay cool. According to Time, Labor Day is noted as the end of summer, and many of these people, upon their return back to the city, would pack away all traces of white considered resort wear. This trend translated into the early 1950's middle class population, and most likely to prior people, who concocted the Memorial to Labor Day only for white rule to emulate the upwardly mobile.

It seems in the film and movies of that era, the rich wore white. I imagine it was because presumably the rich had servants to maintain the white spotless through washing bleaching and ironing even if only slightly smudged. So the rich had to have large wardrobes of white clothes to show off their wealth.

White clothes certainly don't fare well in menial jobs which is what most people had back then.

I abandoned the "no white after Labor Day" bit of nonsense the minute I moved here 20+ years ago. I also now consider flip flops to be "business casual" attire.

Although maybe I would look twice if I saw someone in a tank top and shorts in a blizzard.

light so I switch to a bit heavier weight and those clothes tend not to be white. And my white shoes are sandals so I switch to close-toed footwear...

Four years ago, I found a big sale which even included petite sizes (hard to find sometimes). I bought four pair -- sage green, lavender, dark blue and white. I still have them and I love them, particularly the white ones. They go so well with my sweaters with bright colors and patterns.

So I say wear whatever works for you.
