Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Tue Sep 18, 2012, 07:03 PM

My Veterans benefits, I thought, until today, were from a grateful nation.

Turns out I am a burden to Republicans. I feel so ashamed of my disability benefits, i am nothing but a burden to the people who always claimed they love the troops and veterans. I am sorry America. I have let you down.

And you can tell him I said that. We need people like the Chief with his background, smarts and experience.

And we know if he puts up with you, he's got to be a helluva good man.

21. Fortunate Son...

Last edited Tue Sep 18, 2012, 09:15 PM - Edit history (1)

Mitt's not a draft dodger, he's a chickenhawk who advocated sending other mothers' sons to serve in war and die and be maimed involuntarily while he enjoyed an exemption to dine on Pâté de Foie Gras and other delicacies in France.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Fortunate Son
Recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Written by John Fogerty

Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! More! More! yoh

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no

God, I love Fogerty!

22. your sacrifice is honorable. Only hateful bigots begrudge you your benefits...

the rest of us are part of that grateful nation.

My father left school to volunteer in WWII before there was a draft. He served in the Pacific theater and fortunately survived. Some of his colleagues did not.

After his service he was able to afford to finish his education (on to a Phd), and due to the GI bill many universities expanded in order to accommodate the GI bill education benefits for the millions of veterans from WWII. This benefited both the vets (like my father), and grew the university system (which also benefited my father who became a professor.) Investing in vets - not only honors their sacrifice (part of the social compact that Romney doesn't recognize), it also benefits local economies and industries via stimulus.

I recognize the sarcasm within your post. I hope you don't mind that I used it to point out one area in our relatively recent history, where honoring that service not only completed the social contract, but also expanded economies due to paying that debt.

world. Every time they pinned a new stripe on his uniform he would always thank me because I took care of our little family while he was doing his job. I made sure his job was always first and I made sure I made plans around his job. We both worked but we really worked together. We both grew up in military families so I understood what was his job and what was mine. So I think soldiers work so hard and earn everything they get. Their families should be supported and thank also.

59. Regarding families...

I had the privilege of meeting many Gold Star families when I worked at the Wall in D.C. That was a bittersweet experience.

But what doesn't get enough attention is the children. People come out and express condolences to the the parents of KIAs, but they have no idea what to say to the children. And even in their families, the children can be left out.

At the Wall one day, I found a woman collapsed in front of, what I learned, was her big brother's panel. She told me she couldn't understand how her brother had become a psycho killer.

When I asked what she meant, she handed me a sheaf of documents--including her brother's Silver Star citation.

I had to explain to her that her brother died taking out the enemy positions that were putting out the fire that was killing his friends. Incredibly, she had never understood that.

The woman lived very close to where I grew up, and when I moved back into the area, she was the first one I contacted. When I visited her home, where she still lived with her mother, I asked to see a picture of her brother. She had to go into another room and pull it out of a drawer.

I could be wrong, but it struck me that my friend's ignorance and misunderstanding about what happened to her brother stemmed from her mother's psychological reaction to the loss of her son.

In any case, after our first meeting at the Wall her attitude totally changed--and I think she was proud of her brother for the first time.

I guess it means nothing. She will not be a "contributing" member of society, if she even was as a teacher.

33. A LOT of Americans...

A LOT, believe that people like Romney and corporations like Bain are the ones draining the life out this country. A lot of Americans have no problem with their tax dollars going to help people who need it, or to ensure when a person retires, they have a pension. A country that depends on soldiers like we do damn well better take care of them when they come home. That is the LEAST we can do, and what soldiers get now is not near enough. The people who've chosen to serve and whom our leaders have put in combat have more than earned any "benefits" they draw.

Further, I have no problem with the miniscule percentage of people who simply don't want to work drawing benefits. That number is too low to even worry about. It's hard enough worrying about oneself than to go around judging others and worrying that someone else is going to steal "MY" due, "MY" share (WTF?). However, I do have a problem with a bunch of assholes eating a 50k dinner and dissing half of Americans while plotting how to steal away the public treasury for themselves. I have a big problem with corporations being placed above human beings. I have a problem with Republicans looting the public treasury Every. Fucking. Time. they get into the White House. I'm tired of pigs at the fucking trough who try to blame others while slopping up ill-gotten gains.

55. No Rmoney was ever hurt in the making of America

That from a 47%er collecting social security retirement benefits that I paid into my whole life. And, no, I don't pay income taxes anymore, Mitt, just like you, only in my case it's because most of my income is social security. Wanna tax it, buddy? Bring it on!

56. I'm 100% service connected myself.

Whenever I point out to conservatives that veterans make sacrifices to their country, they invariably come back with, "you knew what you were getting into when you raised your right hand." Yeah, we did. We promised to uphold the Constitution and protect our country from all enemies, foreign and domestic, not fight unnecessary wars of choice to enrich corporations and the wealthy. There's really no such thing as an honorable war, but to be used by corporations and the wealthy to further enrich them, to see young patients die or be severely injured, to mark your own life from one seizure and blackout to the next, is less than being in a war. It's being an expendable pawn in a chess game where the players dispose of you uncaringly in their goal to win.

62. Don't feel bad. Most of America is a burden to Mittens.

Seniors, veterans, handicapped, unemployed, homeowners w/int deductions, students w/loans, retirees on SS, mil retirees.........listen, if you are a burden, then most Americans share the load.
