Romney Campaign Searches for a New Strategy - Ryan Wants To Be Unleashed! Take The Bag Off His Head

Romney Campaign Searches for a New Strategy - Ryan Wants To Be Unleashed! Take The Bag Off His Head

by HoundDog

Team Romney realizes their assumption that economic distress would be enough for them to win the election is not working, so they have "quietly abandoned it' and they have spent the last week struggling to test out new strategies and themes, reports Zeke Miller of Buzzfeed. And, Paul Ryan is champing at the bit "to be unleashed" so he can stress hard-core social conservatives themes.

“No one in Boston thinks this can only be about the economy anymore,” one top aide said last week. “The economy narrows the gap and puts us in contention, but we have to bring more to the table.”

Romney and — particularly — his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, have spent a week road-testing alternatives, going positive and going negative, swinging at the president on everything from faith to foreign policy.

The lackluster August jobs reports represented the critical turning point, when Team Romney was shocked and discouraged to see the nation shrug it off. A report like this was supposed to be their magic bullet, so if this did not vault them ahead on the economic issues, what will?

Ryan himself has emerged as a central player in this calculation, making the case internally for a clearer conservative policy message. One high level Republican with ties to the campaign told BuzzFeed that Ryan was chaffing at Boston constraining him from talking about and defending his policy ideas from Democratic attacks. Ryan wanted to be "unleashed," the Republican said. ... And Ryan’s latest campaign swing offers the clearest indication that he’s gotten his wish. On Friday at the Values Voters Summit in Washington, D.C., Ryan offered a new gambit on offense, attacking Obama on social issues and income inequality in one fell swoop.

As I reported Friday, Bryan Fischer Of American Family Association, a warned Republicans at this same Family Values Conference, that if Romney doesn't shape up, get behind core conservative principles, take the bag off of Paul Ryan's head, and the sock out of his mouth, he will lose and the Republican Party will be dead after this election.

“Take the bag off of Paul Ryan’s head,” he added.“If Barack Obama wins this election, the Republican Party as we know it is finished,” Fischer said. “It is dead, it is toast, you can stick a fork in it.”

Conservatives are joining Democrats in complaining that Mitt Romney is running a campaign devoid of any ideas, and presents himself only as the "anti-Obama."

“Fischer told reporters at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. “It’s because he’s running such a lackluster campaign that has been so vague on ideas. What plan is he offering the American people?” ... “The biggest mistake is they put a bag over Paul Ryan’s head,” ... "they put a sock in Paul Ryan’s mouth'"

We need to get our cartoonists and photoshop artists busy on this one. Sheesh, what are the rest of us going to do if the Republicans keep insisting in doing our creative work?

So now, after intentionally avoiding "policy detail in their convention," Republicans have realized that announcing they are running a campaign totally devoid of ideas, plans, or substance, in't going to work. So, now in a big switch, and the magic of "opposite-speak" Paul Ryan announced that they actually are running a campaign of big idea and specific solutions. Zeke Miller reports"

“It’s not enough just to criticize,” Ryan told a crowd of over 3,000 in rural Virginia on Friday. We owe you solutions, we owe you ideas — and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

I wonder how long it is going to take for them to realize that saying you are providing detailed solutions, while not actually doing it, is not going to work either. American voters seem to have caught on that when Team Romney says they will not explain any of the details of the budget program until after the election, that they are not providing specific solutions.

Ah, the smell of desperation.

Conservatives really don't want to hear more specifics from Mitt Romney

Said the reason that Republicans can't run on their ideas is because they are too extreme.

7. Hey, I know Willard, why don't you talk about tax returns and taxes .............

Tell us how the tax changes you want would effect your taxes
and you can show us 10 years worth so we can follow along

ADD: I still say that Willard used some of his foreign accounts to launder drug money
I have not seen any proof this did not happen

23. If they lie and obscure about anything, it won't work

The reason the economy didn't work for them is not because the economy is a bad issue. It should be a GREAT issue for them. But you can't get a straight answer out of either Ryan or Romney about what they would do differently on the economy. And most of what they DO say is a lie.

So what if they change the subject to foreign affairs? Do you think we'll get any clear answers or even any truthful answers? Seems like Romney answered that in the past week.

And what if they change it to immigration? Any straight answers on that one?

What subject are they willing to talk honestly and clearly about?

And what, exactly, does it mean to focus the campaign on social issues? Does that mean gay-bashing and escalating the war on women? Good luck with that strategy.

8. This was supposed to be a referendum on President Obama

Instead it has become a referendum on Romney. To GOP dismay, Romney is losing.

So after four years of making "I hate Obama" the central theme, now the GOP is going to send in a pinch runner to talk about the issues instead.

Love it. The reason the GOP wanted to make this a referendum in the first place is that they knew they couldn't win on the issues. Now they are going to unleash a leader of Congress (8% approval rate Congress), Mr. Medicare Voucher himself, the Ayn Rand groupie, to contrast issues with President Barack Obama. Their gauntlet has been thrown.

Let's get ready to rumble. This is what the campaign should have been about in the first place.

Unleash their beast. May the best ideas win.

24. Exactly. And now Obama's favorables are +2 or better

So the "I hate Obama isn't working.

And what about "Obamacare"? Despite some really inept campaigning by the Dems on this subject, "Obamacare" is nto working for Romney.

When your top three points of attack are not working, it isn't really likely you're going to score bit by digging deeper into your jar of reasons why Obama is a meanie. And doing this 2 weeks before early voting starts in many areas doesn't sound like a winning plan to me. This sounds like a full-scale meltdown.

13. Oh this will not go well with normal Americans.

Keep talking about that Ryan Budget. It's not like the majority of voters will be any less horrified than after the first introduction. After getting to know "the real Mitt Romney" getting reacquainted with Paul Ryan should be the straw that breaks this campaign's back.

17. OH PLEASE DEAR GOD LET PAUL RYAN SPEAK EVEN MORE!!!!

Every time that sack 'o crap opens his piehole, Rmoney's number plummet even further.

People are now focused on just how damaging to them personally that budget would be, and just how out of his depth he really is.

He can't or won't answer specific questions about what is supposed to be his own plan.

I wonder if Ryan now wishes that he said "No" to the veep offer.

The Senate and House will belong to us as well. And, as they've said, there will be no going back. Americans are caring and compassionate people. They will refuse to turn their backs on children, those with disabilities and seniors.

19. Like Palin, Ryan was discovered after the fact, but was not nominated for the top job.

They can unleash and re heat and double down and whatever they like, but Ryan is not the top of the ticket and they can't make it so. He didn't have the chops then, and he doesn't now.

21. Dumbasses. Thie COULD have been about the economy if you didn't lie about everything.

If you would provide a reasonable disclosure about your own financial history and you would answer the most basic questions about the economic schemes you have in mind for the country, you could win on the economy.

But by all means, please have a go at "family values". I hear Rick Santorum is available to advise yo on that.

Heck. There are still 6 weeks left. You can try three different campaign concepts, each for 2 weeks and see what works for you.

Morans.

And Romney cannot upload ideas or a personality. Plus, Ryan's ideas are not ones the American public necessarily wants.

now if only they would wise up and dump tea party obstructionists, otherwise it will be more of the same.
lyin Ryan can run on undoing medicare, where 20% of benefits will going to profits for private insurance companies.
He will also be after womens health care and reproductive rights issues.
