(2,207 posts)Reminded me of my beloved Baby Brother - a disabled amputee that found love and married after losing his leg and other health issues. We lost him to cancer almost 2 years ago, but will be forever grateful that he found this kind of happiness before he died.

(71,611 posts)That's my thought EVERY time I see a wife/bride who stays true to their vows and nurtures the love she has for her husband.
I guess it's still a bit of an open wound that my 'bride' (married before I went to Nam) didn't seem able to handle the separation and was sleeping with her lover the night I returned from Nam. I guess she showed some kind of "backbone" and didn't waver ... she found some kind of "certainty' that she just wasn't interested in feeling guilty. Or seeing if she could even be open to counseling. For me, the word "betrayal" has deep roots ... and even affects how I see photos like these. Nonetheless, it can't be ALL bad that I can have a DEEP appreciation for the gal in the photos ... and realize that such commitment is so huge. After all, he *IS* still the same guy she married ... who is obviously very courageous. She could do a LOT worse!

(52 posts)with the fucking 'wounded heroes' pics. Yes, it's fucking tragic what happened to him but if I recall:
1. It's all volunteer military right?
2. We shouldn't even be over there in the first place
3. if you really wanna support the troops you should be out in the fucking streets protesting like crazy
4. Did all of you get the tissues out and weep for the thousands of kids who die each week from easily curable diseases? Trillons of dollars spent on wars which participants like those 2 love birds in the pics support. Money that could ERADICATE poverty and disease almost overnight and all of you sigh and gush over this?
I am so sick of the glamorization and romanticm naive people lavish over this stuff. It makes me want to vomit!
Oh, and one other thing - I'm a veteran myself so I believe I have a right to object but I'm sure I'll be crucified over here for speaking my mind.

(73,630 posts)Yet be so callous about the fate of another human being, on the other hand?
I'm a vet too, I don't think that we gave up our basic humanity when we put our uniforms on.
rrHeretic
(52 posts)Oh yes you do (give up basic humanity) especially in a war zone. I guess you never saw the pics of our heroes urinating on dead allegedly enemy? And I use the term 'allegedly' because over there it seems as if we're killing as many civilians as actual combatants.
And callous? Nope.
Reality based - Yep, I plead guilty as charged.

(21,024 posts)Being fully human is a lot tougher.
You have it backwards and I am not a hardass. I am simply one who lives in reality where I can smell bs a mile away. The gushing praises over here regarding those pics are no different than I've seen on politically opposite spectrums elsewhere. And, of course, this begs the question - what makes YOU different from THEM at least politically?
cynatnite
(31,011 posts)Seriously?
Everyone has the right to object whether a vet or not. It's just that you saw the struggles of one soldier after he was horrifically injured and his recovery afterwards. It shows that it is possible to overcome even the worst possible circumstances.
This also shows that we must NEVER forget our vets or what was asked of them whether you agree with that specific war or not.
Just because you hate the wars that's been fought does not mean we should forget or ignore their struggles. These series of photos show why we mustn't forget and shows why we must stand by them no matter what. Standing by our vets does not equate standing by the wars they fought.
rrHeretic
(52 posts)do forget the vets every day. As I said, which you ignored, why aren't YOU in the streets protesting that illegal war?
And your 'stand by them no matter what' is identical rational comments made by practically every zenophobic movement supporting almost every war waged throughout the history of the human species.

(17,111 posts)is glamorization, you are out of your mind. It is a lot of things, but glamorous isn't one of them.
And I don't care if you are a veteran. It gives you a different perspective, but it doesn't make you automatically right or better or worse than others.
You have no idea what I have done all my life about different issues. I don't know what you've been through. I'll say this though. You certainly seem to have a lot of rage, and I think it runs deep. If spewing here gets it out, then good. If not, you are building a volcano that is going to hurt somebody.
rrHeretic
(52 posts)with the psychoanalysis okay? No rage, simply tasting my views about the bs behind wars most of you actually do support whether you realize it or not.
And no, I'm not out of my mind although I will admit that trying to knock sense into people regarding how they're led like sheep by the gov. regarding war probably is kinda insane to try and do but someone must.

(50,566 posts)my first thought is always: "He lost his limbs ... for what?" No good reason. None at all.
It is tragic, unnecessary, and such a waste.
I'm glad his fiancee/wife was there to support him.
rrHeretic
(52 posts)Your response is probably the most sound and rational here.

(50,566 posts)People on this thread probably won't like this, but ...
I also think about all the maimed Iraqis (or whatever group of people we happen to be assaulting at the time) and how many are limbless (or dead) because of what our country does.
Photos like these are never evoke just sentimental, "aw, isn't it sweet that she stuck with him" kinds of emotions with me because there is a whole ugly, ugly backstory to why he became the way he is.
rrHeretic
(52 posts)another thanks! And you reminded me about something I'd done on my blog over a year ago. I'd found some horrific pics of Iraqi kids who were killed and/or horribly maimed by our 'heroes'. I posted them on my blog and expressed my outrage about this. The response? One gigantic yawn - not one comment or anything.
It can be dismaying at times sorta like a voice crying in the wilderness. But then someone comes along, abeit rarely, but still - someone like you who verifies everything I've been feeling and saying.
So, once more, thanks.

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy.
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you
in time - It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
All you need is love (all together now)
All you need is love (everybody)
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

(14,177 posts)No man lives on an island. For every soldier killed or wounded there are family members who are affected as well. So the damage ripples out into the community. These two show us how to heal the damage it is a lot more than just a physical thing. There is a lot of emotional healing that needs to happen too. I think they managed to do both very well. I hope in the future this kind of heroism becomes less necessary.
