Tom Petty 'Got Chills' When Democratic National Convention Played 'Won't Back Down'

From Rolling Stone:

Tom Petty 'Got Chills' When Democratic National Convention Played 'Won't Back Down'

From Silversun Pickups to Twisted Sister, artists have been lamenting the use of their music by Republicans in the 2012 presidential campaign. Tom Petty can relate. "I've been on the wrong side where I've had to tell some candidates to stop using my music," he told Rolling Stone on the MTV VMAs red carpet.

But Petty was pleasantly surprised on Wednesday night, when his song "I Won't Back Down" played as President Obama walked onstage at the Democratic National Convention, after former President Bill Clinton's speech. "I got chills," said Petty. "They knew it would be okay. I've had a chance to meet the President and talk to him about the music he listens to."

The Top Five Songs for the Mitt Romney Presidential Campaign
by Zach Schonfeld

The Republicans need your help. It’s the music. See, they love rock ‘n’ roll—almost as much as the bands loathe them.

It’s not a new phenomenon. In 1984, President Reagan’s reelection team famously mistook Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” for a patriotic, fist-pumping banger. Springsteen was less than impressed. “The President was mentioning my name the other day, and I kinda got to wondering what his favorite album musta been,” the Boss quipped. “I don’t think he’s been listening to [Nebraska].” Twenty-eight years later, at last week’s Republican National Convention, Governor Chris Christie, a diehard fan, referenced the singer during his speech. Never mind that Springsteen has refused to back Christie or appear at his 2010 inauguration.

That hardly matches the sting of Tom Morello’s attack on Paul Ryan. When it came out that the Wisconsin rep loves Rage Against the Machine (he did attend college in the early ‘90s, after all), Morello didn’t stick to folksy barbs or polite declinations. He took to Rolling Stone with a scathing op-ed, declaring Ryan’s vision “antithetical to the message of Rage”. Ryan, the guitarist wrote, is “the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades”.

See link to see what songs they suggested he use. lol

I recently put all my music on an iPod, and started listening randomly, and because I have all of Petty's stuff, it comes up quite frequently, from all eras-- '76 to MOJO. And I'm awestruck at how consistently great he is.
Tom Petty is one of us (see THE LAST DJ) and worthy of the Pantheon for sure.

When I heard "I Won't Back Down" start to play at the DNC, I said to my wife, "I bet Tom won't mind." Several years ago I saw Tom in Art's Deli in Studio City ("Every sandwich is a work of Art&quot . He was sitting in the back by himself. It was 3 o'clock in the afternoon so he was probably having breakfast. (He is a musician after all.) I seriously considered speaking to him but I've never been comfortable approaching celebrities in public so I didn't. Have regretted it ever since.
