When you get right down to it, Romney's comment is precisely the description of how the middle class was lost. Workers are no longer partners in a great enterprise, they are debits on the balance sheet. This applies to the civil sector as well as the military. That sort of thinking has taken the country all the way to the latrine.

From Rumsfeld, an ugly smear and a giant fib

By Mark Shields Creators Syndicate

snip...

First, the smear of veterans. Speaking of the 11 million Americans who, during the Vietnam years, answered their country's draft call and the 2 million who served in Vietnam, Rumsfeld alleged that these draftees "added no value, no advantage, really, to the United States armed services over any sustained period of time, because the churning that took place, it took enormous amount of effort in terms of training, and then they were gone."

I'll say "then, they were gone!" Of the 58,152 Americans who gave their lives in Vietnam 20,352 of them were draftees. How dare the secretary of defense say these good and brave Americans "added no value, no advantage, to the United States armed services?"

Why would he slander the sacrifice of these brave men, dishonor their memory and rub salt in their families' wounds?

Certainly a man as smart as Rumsfeld knows that the draft was specifically intended to trigger volunteers. Faced with the certainty of a future draft call, many young men chose to "volunteer" because then they could select which branch of the service they preferred and, if qualified, the specialized training they desired. As for the next asshole thing. the interviewer? Who is that putz? the way he frames the question "are you sorry you opened up that line of attack??" And he prefaces it by saying.. 'you spoke to the VFW the day before..." But instead of being a decent journalist who asks "are you sorry you did not mention the troops?" or EVEN "why DIDN'T you mention the troops"

Then the final asshole of the double/triple assohole is Romney himself. Laughing, smirking, and saying that "he only talked about things tha were important." OH.. a "strong military" (which he referred to in defense spending NOT their sacrifices!) and thought that was enough of an homage to them?? Really? who the fuck would vote for that liar? Presumably he thinks our military isn't strong now. Is he claiming our soldiers aren't fighting hard enough, that they aren't tough enough? If he means they are fighting today without the right equipment, that only makes those men and women more heroic.

Mitt, America is at war and you want to be Commander in Chief. You didn't criticize how the war is being fought, you IGNORED it, and you ignored the men and women who are in harms way now when you did so. Next time try the laundry list approach, it would be less insulting to real people fighting a real war NOW. You can argue over what military hardware you want this nation to purchase LATER, in the unlikely event you manage to get elected.

I can understand getting a deferment on the grounds of religious beliefs (I don't know that that's how he got out of serving, I'm just assuming that it was because he had to go to France to annoy people). But if his religion forbids him from going and killing people, how on earth could he demonstrate in FAVOR of the war? That alone should have gotten his ass on a plane to Vietnam toute suite on the basis that he clearly wasn't opposed to war after all.

Sat Sep 8, 2012, 10:43 AM

It was not against protesters against the war. It was against protestors who thought that exemption because of the score you got on an aptitude test was unfair. That test was put in place because students at Stanford and other elite school were complaining that a raw percentage of deferments were given, and they did not account for the smarter student body at Stanford.

In other words he was protesting to enhance his own status as being exempt from the draft which is far worse!!! It fits in perfectly with his priviledged story ("Fortunate Son" anyone).

The protestors he was protesting were risking their own exemption status by protesting.

I wish some reporter would have the brass to ask him this question.

Also I hear he got some strings pulled to get the religious exemption.

Staffer Muscles Clench

I think you can be sure Mitt Romney’s press handlers got a bad feeling in the pits of their stomach when Romney gave this answer.

Bret Bair asks if he regrets not mentioning the troops in his convention speech …

“When you give a speech you don’t go through a laundry list, you talk about the things that you think are important and I described in my speech, my commitment to a strong military unlike the president’s decision to cut our military.”

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/09/staffer_muscles_clench.php?ref=fpblg

----------------------

How DARE Romney even utter the words he uttered today. He has never served in our military, neither have his sons. He has never known the sacrifice or what it means to either serve or be a parent of a child who serves, and he will never know the heart ache, the worry, the tears, the pride, the part of you that is missing while your child serves hundreds or thousands of miles away.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]To this goon, hierarchical institutions are equivalent to or greater than human beings.

Corporations > people.

Military > troops.

Got that everyone?

"We the People" are just "you people" -- have-not, insignificant mites in the collective. The institutions commanded by the "haves" of wealth and power are supreme, and the reTHUGs are the political arm of this juggernaut for their corporate masters.

Don't underestimate their ultimate aims for a minute.

The men and women who are putting their lives on the line every day to protect the people of the country they love are no more than a laundry list of unimportant "issues".......AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

76. Here are Romneys EXACT WORDS:
Sat Sep 8, 2012, 09:49 AM
Sep 2012
"Everywhere I go in America, there are monuments that list those who have given their lives for America. There is no mention of their race, their party affiliation, or what they did for a living. They lived and died under a single flag, fighting for a single purpose. They pledged allegiance to the UNITED States of America.

That America, that united America, can unleash an economy that will put Americans back to work, that will once again lead the world with innovation and productivity, and that will restore every father and mother's confidence that their children's future is brighter even than the past.

That America, that united America, will preserve a military that is so strong, no nation would ever dare to test it."

That's it, folks. In other words: the military is there to serve the advancement of the economy. Looking at those words again, he doesn't even mention "freedom" or "democracy" as something our military fights for.

He disgusts me.

That's his excuse.

OK. That is how you KNOW he thinks corporations are people. The "military" that he wants to give untold trillions of dollars to is a vast bureaucratic-industrial complex. The "troops" are the actual human beings who do the extremely dangerous work that this complex creates.

Mitt can't tell the difference. That's perfect.

This video is so so so hard to watch, I can't imagine how our military feels about being part of a laundry list. I feel like I have to say thank you at this very moment to our military.

Thank You

That anyone would say service men and women belong on a laundry list is beyond comprehension. Whatever else we are, we are not things to be hand waved away, no human being is.

So on behalf of all those killed in places you never heard of and the many more who had their bodies, minds and lives destroyed by steel, fire and all manner of other shit, fuck you Romney and the garbage scow you barged in on.

Sat Sep 8, 2012, 12:42 PM
Sep 2012

he just said that the troops are not important so that's why he did not speak about them in length. Then he says his mentioning the military a few times fixes that. The guy has no common sense at all plus he has that upper management attitude. The institutions matter while the "little people" don't.

93. Not A Commander In Chief Level Comment

So the troops in harms way are on his laundry list but not important enough to include in his speech. Ouch. Maybe if he or one of his five sons had served in the military his outlook would be more forgiving and appreciative of the sacrifice they are making for their country. This is not a Commander in Chief level comment. Not even close.
