I donated to to a presidential campaign for the first time in my life.
Why?
I watched Michelle Obama's speech from last night, I heard the heart in her voice. I can tell from listening to her and watching her how much she and Barack love each other.
I've seen Skinner and EarlG's pictures from the convention.
I see the stark contrast between the hatefest that was the RNC last week and welcome, accepting, forward-looking tone of the DNC.
Mitt and his running mate have told such outright lies they simply can't be ignored. Their convention was an example of misogyny, xenophobia, batshit crazy, and utter hatred and contempt. Ours clearly won't be. Will be win the hearts and minds of single issue voters (abortion, etc.)? No. We never would anyway. However close (or hopefully not) the election is, I think there are enough sane people to recognize the goodness in our President, to be repelled by the close-mindedness and short-sightedness of the Republicans and their platform. I think women are sick of having men (especially this current set of slobs) dictate to them what they should or should not do with their bodies (while at the same time embracing and promising "smaller government", whatever the hell that is). I think a growing number of people are sick of knowing they're being told outright lies--this I hear even from the most right-leaning people I work with. When the "best" your party has to offer induces the base to face palm

my read is you're screwed.
I remember all the elections of the last decade -- at the time it seemed imperative that a Democrat win to stop the madness. This election, to me, has even more in the balance than those ever did. So I'm all in
and maybe I'm naïve, but I believe when we all go to the polls in November, enough people will be right there with us.
There. Had to get that off my chest. Have a pleasant evening.

be still and know.
(7 posts)You've been paid, sir. How do I know this? Why would you not have thought 2008 was imperative, what with Sister Word Salad a heartbeat away from the POTUS and the 8 years of hell we'd been thru?

(238 posts)Maybe I'm naive, but I think enough people realized the horror that McCain/Palin presented to the US. I also tend to think things aren't as close as we're told, what with unverifiable voting machines, etc. in the mix. If things are "close" then it's more interesting.
Frankly, I didn't say it wasn't imperative. However -- there's a frightening shift in the ugliness of what the Republicans are selling this time around. To go down that path, to embrace it as a nation, to swing that far to the right, well, that terrifies me. I didn't lose friends in 2008. Can't say the same this time around.
To be clear--I'm not even sure I'd say I'm sad at those losses either. Surprised maybe, but it goes with my original point: I decided it was time to make a stand as opposed to being silent.
