In 1972 George Romney complained "My family and I were forced out of Mexico..."

So they aren't here by choice? They would prefer Mexico? Is that why Mitt says he will style his, god forbid, adminstration on James Polk -- to re-invade Mexico?

Romney has the audacity to question Obama's love of this country while his father tells us that the reason the Romney family is here is because they "were FORCED out of Mexico" !?

Found this outrageous quote while researching the parallels between Mitt in NOLA and his father who visited the flooded regions of Wilkes-Barre in 1972 as part of the Nixon administration.

People pelted Romney with shouts of “Why don’t you talk to the people?” “I have a HUDache.” “The people come first.” “Agnes took everything but our mortgages.”

Romney responded with statements like, “My family and I were forced out of Mexico some time ago. I came out of that with only a wristwatch. We had no equity, and if you think I’m going to recommend equity in this situation, you have another thought coming.”

This is the guy who raised Mitt Romney and if Romney is ever forced out of the US he will have more than a wristwatch waiting for him in the Caymans. Perhaps Mitt can invade Mexico as "An Army of One."

imagine the psychological implications of being in a refugee family from its ancestral homeland.

4. The quote reads almost like he is saying 'you whiners, I don't even want to be in this country'

or perhaps 'shut up and eat your debt' (eg the mortgage on your house that doesn't exist anymore.)

The episode ended George Romney's political career so I am sure it is memorable for Mitt.

5. Maybe Romney should use this as his campaign theme music

He doesn't have to live like a refugee. He could try going back to Mexico.

6. Knowing the history of the Romney family, I have a theory.

His grandfather fled this country to Mexico because he wanted more than one wife and didn't want to abide by the laws of this country. In Mexico, he was able to do as he pleased and be a polygamist. Mexico was chosen as the preferred home of the Romney's over the US. Then George makes this statement about being forced out of Mexico; he didn't choose to come back to the US.

Growing up in such a family environment, where a person's attitudes and beliefs are formed from a very young age, it seems to me that Mitt really has a problem with the US and it may explain his cut throat business practices and obsession with becoming president. Dare I say the Romney family hates the US, that Mitt wants to be president to ruin the US?

Never underestimate the power of familial influence, especially in a family such as Mitt's.

Seems like they have a different attitude toward living here than most of us do. I think they feel persecuted by the majority and have become very comfortable in the role of nation-less fleecers.

11. George forced his wife to run for office and when she lost George said it was all her idea.*

Now what's left of that smoldering torch is passed to Mitt, which means it really wasn't Mitt's idea to run for President. He never had much choice in the matter. In his own mind, he can spin that into a kind of 'destiny.'
