Let me be the first to wish a happy Labor Day

First, with some history http://journals.democraticunderground.com/hfojvt/47

Although such stories probably seem pretty far removed from today. Probably hard to inspire anybody who isn't a history buff.

Labor day does not seem to be celebrated much, and I cannot remember many labor day events even from my childhood in the 1970s. Very few parades and ceremonies will be held tomorrow. The only one I know of right now is in Uniontown, Kansas. A town of 275 trying to live up to their name. Pretty cool. It is tempting for me to make the six hour drive an walk in it.

Topeka, however, is much closer and they usually have an event.

I kinda skipped church this morning. On Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, they typically honor the military people in the congregation. On this weekend, they probably would not honor the laborers. But even if they did, wouldn't almost everybody claim to be a laborer? There is no distinction made any more between the working class and the rest of us. After all, most people work at something.

And if there was a working class, who would want to admit to be part of it? Wiki defines it as
"Working class (or lower class, labouring class, sometimes proletariat) is a term used in the social sciences and in ordinary conversation to describe those employed in lower tier jobs (as measured by skill, education and lower incomes), often extending to those in unemployment or otherwise possessing below-average incomes." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_class

Well if there is such a class - I am in it (for now and for the past 26 years http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002625762).

However, I am speaking of the bottom 50 or 60%, not the bottom 99%. Those above 60% can sympathise with us, can work hard, feel unappreciated, and not be super-rich, but you simply are not part of the bottom 60%. http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=732414

But don't feel bad. Most of us in the bottom 60% would trade the "honor" of being part of the working class for the money to escape it.

But to my fellow members of the working class - happy Labor Day.
