Convention Bandleader G.E. Smith Not A Republican Or Political At All

Convention Bandleader G.E. Smith Not A Republican Or Political At All

G.E. Smith, the former Saturday Night Live bandleader who headed up the musical entertainment at the Republican National Convention, says he is not in fact interested in politics.

"I have absolutely no idea what they are talking about," Smith told The Hill, as his band was packing up their equipment.

For Smith, the convention was simply a gig for a professional musician: "We're like Doctors Without Borders. We go where the need is greatest."

8. While I would rather take a sharp stick in my eye than aid the GOP in the slightest

I also am mindful of judging others.
I am not without sin myself.

18. GE Smith has plenty of money. He wasn't forced to do that venue by need. There's no comparison

to janitors, or even caterers.

4. I sympathize but it might hurt him. But I do understand.

When you're in the arts you generally take the money. I sell books to conservatives all the time. I put up with beurocrats wanting me to edit and I do it if it's not important and never if it is. It's harder when your art is out there for all to see.

7. Just like B.B. King- except HE was/is a conservative.

G. E. Smith- thy name is "whore" (this is a biblical reference so you can alert if you want to but understand this- i speak as a musician myself)

9. Have any of you ever had a visceral hatred of someone just

based on how they look and carry themselves, that's how I have always felt about this guy. If he was at the DNC convention I would feel the same way. There's something about how smug he looks all the time that bothers me.

14. Musician's union is OK with ReCan'ts

Nixon constantly had COINTELPRO guys showing up at rock gigs asking to see everyone's union cards back in the day.

The musician's union is just another way to neutralize the social and political power of music.

12. It's back to reservation casinos and dinner theatre.

Who knows, with all this publicity G.E. might get to open in Laughlin for Dennis Miller.

13. Well, back in 1989 -

he liked what the GOP did for his wallet enough to be one - and that is a quote. Maybe he's changed...doubt it, but maybe.

15. Last time i saw him he was Bob Dylan's guitarist.

A lot of the Nashville session guys are like this.

I know a few guys like this who will work for anyone.

Didn't the drummer for the Pixes work for Donnie Osmond for a spell?
