So, Morning Joe is hosting a "Wake."

I came to DU first to get impressions of the repub convention last night and the speeches. Sifting through the expected bias I still know I will get the truth. I then turned on MJ and honestly, it truly is like a Wake. There is no joy, enthusiasm, just realization that it is over. Do I have it right? Was MJ more enthusiastic and "up" prior to my tuning in?

2. I watched two speeches

Governors' Kasich and Christi. Both talked about themselves and how great they are and all the amazingly great things they've done with their States. Romney was definitely not the main subject of their speeches. It struck me as totally narcissistic on both their parts.

4. I think the problem is

that every time they keep demanding that Rmoney "be himself" or that his family and surrogates try to better define what he is, the effort keeps failing (in their minds) due to unrealistic expectations. And that's because they are trying to project on him what THEY want him to be - basically a white version of Obama - with alot of enthusiasm and charisma, but with a far RW bent.

As the man said himself (as Popeye) - I yam what I yam.

And the problem is - there is no there there.

The man is a hollow, cold, calculating entity who is simultaneously trying to run away from the charitable part of his upbringing in search of glory - but not glory by good works. He defines glory in a more objective form - by his wealth. And the thrill for him, his ultimate drug of choice, is his journey in the accumulation of that massive wealth - NOT the betterment of society. And in order to do this, he must completely disconnect from society and its people (those who are impacted by his activities) in order to satisfy that wealth addiction.

And thus he sits there, an empty shell of a man. And that is highly disconcerting to the shillers (who ironically, really don't like him but are forced to support him for the good of the party).

7. "they are trying to project on him what THEY want him to be - basically a white version of Obama"

is exactly what they would like, and it just ain't gonna happen. When the public sees the enthusiasm and joy at the Democratic convention, the comparison will be extreme. FLOTUS herself will rock the rafters....Have not heard any positives for Romney, just a robot with batteries dying out.

8. Last night Tweety described how he came out to greet his wife

after her speech and how it was like he was on wheels and was "rolled out" onto the stage. I understand that some commentors on CNN sortof said the same. I keep wondering if he may actually have physical issues - i.e., chronic back pain... Even my mother wondered if maybe he has a colostomy bag and that is why he walks so stiffly and sits so stiffly and didn't hop up out of the chair to at least wave when he was being applauded.

11. One of the best descriptions of Mitt Romney I have ever read.

"An empty shell of a man"...so true and it must really scare the Repubs that he is so cold and unfeeling. No one wins elections without being somewhat human.

16. That is an excellent and truly religious analysis of Romney.

Don't know if you intended it that way but it is.

19. I like how Matthews put it last night

about Romney.

It was like Prince Charles visiting New Guinea. (There was no recognition/relation whatsoever. Mitt was in a strange land, as always he is.)

and the one where Tweety said Mitt is so wooden it's like he came out on wheels at the end of his wifes sickening little speech about her favourite little boy. That's what it sounded like to me, a mom talking to a principal to get her son out of a jam.

20. Well said

Consider ALL the emphasis on the task given to Ann Romney and the many statements that it was possibly the most important speech. What that was was a concession that after years of campaigning, Mitt really is not liked and inspires no one.

Although all wives and families are said to show other dimensions of their husbands, I have NEVER seen any wive's speech built up to this level. Hillary was presented by the 1992 campaign as the brilliant, competent person she is, but her speech was not given this level of importance"

I think she did as well as anyone could expect - given what they wanted her to sell. Seriously, does anyone think that it was a "struggle" to live off Mitt's stocks for 5 years of school? For many who took out loans that they paid off for years and worked part time jobs, saying this was tough shows a lack of touch with most people's lives. (Not to mention, as one of 9 kids, the comment of 5 screaming boys as a counter to theirs being a storybook life. I seriously don't remember a lot of screaming and I do remember a lot of laughter in my lower middle class home.)

I think Kerry's daughters did far more to get people to see their dad as a person - and he didn't start with the unfavorables that Mitt did. This might support what one commentator said which was that real stories rather than just claims that Mitt was a good person were needed. That is wha both Kerry daughters did and what Ann failed to do.

23. You nailed it. Not single tangible example of Mitt's "wit/compassion/caring"

just multiple repetitions that they met "at a high school dance." So, Queen Ann, you've known him since you were a teenager and you still can't provide ONE example of him not being a hair-cutting, job-cutting a-hole???

Or was the he-doesn't-like-to-take-credit BS supposed to convince us that even a SINGLE story about the human side of Mittens would have sent him into terminal embarrassment??

Sorry, not buying.

6. Republicans are emitting a Group Soul Fart. Almost everyone smells it.

But some will continue to watch Fox Corporate Propaganda (R) and listen to Rush & Hannity & O'Reilly lie, and meanwhile try to pretend that they do not smell the rank, pestilent, sour, pus-oozing gas slithering out of Republican pieholes.

Because if the Republicans succeed, America loses. Big time. That's the ugly stanky truth of the matter.

9. They were downright depressed!

I didn't watch those speeches so I got up this morning with a knot in my stomach...but wow, they really didn't care that much for them. Except Andrea later gave Ann a 9 (out of possible 10) when asked her assessment. She wrinkled up her nose and didn't offer a number on Christie...
