...Made a trip this morning to Seattle to share with my sibs the closure of my Moms estate, to hear the will read and collect my share of the inheritance. Mom passed away Christmas Eve last year.
At the end of the meeting my wife and sis-n-law were talking she is the kitchen manager at the local high school in town. She said she doesnt like the First Lady because she now must see that each student that comes down the lunch line must have 2 vegetables and 1 fruit serving on their tray because of nutrition standard recommended Mrs O. She said it makes more work for her and doesn't think Michelle should have that kind of influence on what goes on in our schools.
Anyhow I'm glad we all had got our $$$ because I asked her how she felt when Laura Bush said we should read to our kids or when Nancy Regan said JUST SAY NO... did they have any business saying those things???(the hamsters started to turn the wheel at this point) well I don't know she said so I kindly said then is it because of the extra work you have to do each day or is it that you don't agree with Obamas policy's in general, she finally said Obamas policys.
So I told her many kids don't get the nutrition at home because of economics and many come to school hungry. I asked her if she thought it was a bad policy to let my 24 year old niece remain on my brothers employer based health insurance or the fact that my brothers employer cant kick him off the health insurance policy because he has kidney issues...NO she said, I said those are Obama policy's.
I then said one thing about the policy's you have to follow at work is that the Obamas are not profiting because of it like Bush Jr family. did with No Child Left Behind and look at the dismal results from that. I closed and said when kids don't eat right we all pay the price over time...Agreed??
WELL YEA SHE SAID while shaking her head in amazement that I actually know something and how to tell it like it is.

(3,783 posts)Thanks for the reminder to be patient. It gets tiresome.
I guess it pays off to remember that lots of people need a little help opening their minds and they're not being obtuse and obnoxious on purpose (sometimes). PATIENCE.

How many times have new rules and regs come to us when we are working?
Usually that ends up putting the burden on the workers who already have a full plate, and we never see extra hands hired to take in the overage, so anything that adds to the workload is considered bad.
Sometimes we vent..

(35,654 posts)That's what happens when you read DU--you're actually informed and have examples to back up your case. I'm an English teacher and this is what it's all about: we try to teach our students to do what you just did.
Next step is to get your sister-in-law to watch Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. Wow, is that an eye opener. It is so sad how our schools have just bought into the junk food of American corporations. It's really a hard job for Jamie and in one of the episodes of the show, he goes up against the school lunch ladies and the director of the school's lunch program.
As an organic gardener and someone interested in health and good food, I was appalled at what they are serving these kids. I'm not a mother, so I didn't really know what they were doing. This is America's future and we're feeding them processed food. Just another sick, sick thing that corporatism has done to America.

Any Vance book you read will help with usage, that's just a really neat one I think you might appreciate.
Well done, nevertheless. I hope you have more opportunities to enlighten people even outside of family.

(41,694 posts)My wife was the food service coordinator in a children's emergency shelter that participated in the USDA Breakfast and Lunch program. If the kid didn't have the minimum requirements on his plate, it could not be counted.
The paperwork was tremendous. you had to show what was prepared, a nutritional analysis of both the whole meal and each item on the menu for each meal. How many servings were used and what was done with the extras..
she had to do do this for two locations and two meals at each. 4 forms a day had to be filled out and kept on file.

(35,392 posts)Asked him how he (bil) was doing (2004).
He said that he was going to be voting for Kerry that year (he probably thought that I was leaning toward Bush).
Well, brother's buddies heard this, and a RW female swooped down on me and started giving me holy hell about the Dems.
I held my own plenty, but then her husband realized that she was losing, and he joined in on attacking me. I still held my own against both of them. Finally, the husband had to admit that I was "not like any liberal he's met".
Yeah, you run around with liberals who like being attacked daily. Must watch those professional punching bags on Faux.
They double-teamed me, and I held my own. Wonder if they would have been so willing to walk into a batch of liberals and go one-on-one with any one of them (let alone be double-teamed ...).
