More thanfour months after a Manchester man was arrested for trying to snap the neck ofhis cat and leave it for dead, Smokey the cat is now up for adoption at theManchester Animal Shelter. WhenSmokey became ill last April with a urinary tract infection, police say hisowner tried to break his neck because he couldn't afford the veterinarianbills. When Smokey passed out from lack of oxygen instead of the break,
theowner tossed him into bushes by the sideof a Manchester parking lot thinking he was dead. Fortunately,a passerby heard Smokey's cries and contacted animal control.
The owner,who was found guilty on two counts of animal cruelty, was ordered to pay a$1,200 fine with $1,000 suspended for three years. He also was prohibited fromowning or caring for an animal during that time.
