It almost seems like they want to hide the idea that Mitt Romney is going to be nominated as their presidential candidate.
They know that the major networks (ABC/CBS/NBC) will not be covering much of the event on Monday night.
They also know there is a chance everything could be wiped out because of Hurricane Isaac. In fact they made this change AFTER the news broke that Isaac could wreck havoc on the convention. I mean Tampa won't a direct hit but the stadium where the event is being hosted is right by the water - so there could be a bit of a mess there.
Thoughts anyone?

(34,845 posts)It would be an even greater disaster if they have to postpone the nomination for a couple of weeks.

(954 posts)At worst, Isaac is going to be a cat1 that blows over in a day.
This is Tampa, the lightning capital of the world. They get violent thunderstorms there DAILY at this time of year. One way or another, there will be flooding and travel problems during the days.
The national media just hypes weather danger by habit.

(10,857 posts)The real problem is that Mitt Romney is the weakest candidate to limp into a convention since frontrunner Thomas Dewey lost the nomination to Wendell Willkie in 1940, who in turn was crushed by Franklin Roosevelt's third bid.
Fortunately for us and unfortunately for Republicans, Romney's people are expert at taking decisions out of the hands of the unwashed masses. So they're using the hurricane as justification to force-feed Romney's own nomination before the moRons can screw it all up.
I think Mitt is going to play real dirty, too. Let's just see how many Paul delegates miss flights, get left at the airport, find their hotel reservations have been lost, and so on.
There is a second very important thing Mitt has to do, which is to force-feed Paul Ryan to the convention as well. That nomination is considerably more difficult to secure if it goes up by itself with Romney's delegates outnumbered three to one and Ron Paul's people in attendance.
I fully expect the move to get Romney on the ticket early will be quickly followed by an attempt to do the same for Ryan, quite possibly before the Ron Paul delegates can assemble thanks to a broad series of unfortunate coincidences and slick rule changes.

(111,052 posts)It is to shut off any opposition that Ron Paul might work up during the convention. They want to shut him down before he gets started.

(954 posts)They can't afford to have ANY of the negative buzz build during the convention.

(954 posts)And the last thing they want is for the media frenzy to somehow begin questioning his nomination.
Let's remember that the GOP has a LOT of detractors within... from the Paulbots to the Gingrich types.

(31,706 posts)Remember, there are several states where the Paulbots outnumber the other delegates and I suspect Paul will have a good number of votes in the first round...very embarassing. Also, I would go one step further...once Willard gets the votes, it's traditional for that vote to be made unanimous (remember Hillary going to the floor in '08 and doing that for President Obama?). I don't see that happening...and again, another embarassment.
Also Monday is when the party's draconian platform is voted on...and the less that's seen/heard the better...witness the Akin fiasco. Team Mittens is trying to control a fractured and angry party and the last minute futzing with speakers and agenda shows how insecure they are in their ability to control this circus.
Cheers...

(20,886 posts)About Ron Paul. They don't want to show there is any opposition, much less just how much, there is to Mitney. Getting it done before the hurricane hits is probably part of it, too.
Another possibility is to screw up anything the dems have planned, and I suspect they have something planned.

(6,109 posts)The Ron Paul crowd might still cause trouble, particularly if they add a few delegates released by the other candidates, including some that are upset by treatment of Akin.
But Hurricane Isaac will cause even bigger problems by Monday night, with likely flooding of convention area.
Expect storm to be stronger than current forecasts.

(14,656 posts)is a mistake that the Dems will benefit from. The formal nomination of a candidate is the tie that binds....just sayin'............repukes just continue to shoot themselves in the foot. imho

(95,337 posts)I mean it was after Obama's nomination that I realized that the PUMAs were all bark and no bite.
Obama surged ahead after his convention and never looked back.

(954 posts)This is going to be more about showcasing a "new GOP" and platform, not so much about Pro-Romney.
They desperately want to reorganize and rope in the outliers, but they know they're not there yet.
