Hugh Hefner: The GOP Want To "Dehumanize Everyone's Sexuality & Criminalize Your Entire Sex Life"

Nearly 50 years ago in the pages of this magazine I warned that “when religion rather than reason dictates legislation, do not expect logic with your law.” Today, in every instance of sexual rights falling under attack, you’ll find legislation forced into place by people who practice discrimination disguised as religious freedom. Their goal is to dehumanize everyone’s sexuality and reduce us to using sex for the sole purpose of perpetuating our species. To that end, they will criminalize your entire sex life.

The 1st Amendment forbids the creation of an established religion.
It does not say religions or religious entites are free to destroy democracy.
It allows, rather, freedom of worship.
If anything, religious organizations and institutions must be circumscribed in their influence and in their aspirations.

Perhaps it's just me, but lately I've been seeing a lot of writing from people who are ordinarily rather apolitical suddenly piping up because their own interests are finally threatened. Heff here probably doesn't count in that group because, after all, he is saying, "I told you so!"

But Heffner's voice can be included among a wide array of others that are, suddenly, interested in what's going on because one batshit-crazy party is targeting them directly, while simultaneously making it more difficult to vote them out.

It's a little sad to me because it represents a failure on our part. Democrats have fought tooth and nail for thirty years to prevent a long list of rights from being lost to the tide of moneyed conservatism that has flooded us. But we failed, mainly I think because people just don't give a damn until the things they care about are threatened.

Of course, by then it is too late and it will probably take a lot longer than thirty years to win back those rights we have already willingly surrendered. But it is nice to see people finally beginning to realize, even belatedly, that their political apathy has led to potential personal disaster.

And a lot of losses have been taken on "our side" which have been swept under the rug.

Why do I call it "our side"? Because a lot of our party are fair weather fighters, and don't like working with people like Heff because they see him as part of the problem.

An example I remember was Larry Flynt(Also very well "regarded" by "our side&quot was fighting to have neutral journalists in Afghanistan in the first months of the war when we were literally hearing NOTHING about what the Military was doing there. A lot of people were scared to support such an assault on the Bush Admin because of the 9/11 cloud over everything.

It struck me as VERY wrong that nobody had the guts to back Flynt up on that...but from there I've seen things that I thought were impossible here in the US, so it was just a warning of things to come.
