(4,628 posts)His GOP masters have apparently given him the A-OK to vote the way Massachusetts wants him to, in order to curry favor with the electorate. He has to move (or at least vote) to the middle in order to even have a chance against Elizabeth Warren.
Nothing more, nothing less.

It is senates duty to vote up or down on appointments, not block them. The law they passed establishing an agency to oversee protection for consumers, needs an admiinstrator to function. Brown has enough sense to see this to his credit.

Santorum sharply criticized the president for recess-appointing Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau -- although he called it the Consumer Financial Services Commission -- and two Democrats and one Republican to fill vacancies on the National Labor Relations Board.
"When Congress refuses to act and as a result hurts our economy and puts people at risk, I have an obligation as president to do what I can without them," Obama said in a speech in Shaker Heights, Ohio, explaining his actions. "I have an obligation to act on behalf of the American people."
"What the president did was wrong," said Santorum.
"Pretty scary stuff," he added. "I hope that the United States Senate does what they're supposed to do, and they should go and even take the president to court. This is not something that the president should get away with."
One man yelled, "Impeach!" in response.

(5,818 posts)What Cordray's appointment hurts is unregulated LOAN-SHARKING by payday lenders who charge their customers an average of 400 percent! The Federal government currently has no power to regulate these usurers, and Cordray's appointment will change that. See http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002121504 and especially that OP's link to a "gateway" article in Slate.com.
