I begin to understand why the President chose the theme "Forward." (not backward)

First the obvious, "Forward" implies progress and resonates with Progressives. But it is also in opposition to the folks who want to "take our country back." He wants to contrast with a play on that phrases meaning: "take our country backward" Backward means not just the GW Bush, but to the time of Herbert Hoover-- with no safety net and few business regulations, or perhaps even further backward to the 19th century before the progressive income tax: the era of economic panics and Robber Barons. Many in the GOP would apparently feel just fine living in an era of so much "freedom," and the accompanying social mores and biases (woman didn't have the vote, racial and ethnic bias were widely accepted as the norm, etc.)

The key is to pin this meaning on the GOP policies and then propose how to really move Forward. I eagerly await the President's policy proposals, which I hope will be presented at the convention.

"President Barack Obama told donors at a fundraising event that comments on rape and abortion by Todd Akin, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Missouri, represent a “desire to go backward instead of forward.”"
