Think Progress: President Obama Has Made Far Fewer Recess Appointments Than Any Recent President

Despite the inevitable conservative complaints that President Obama is engaged in some kind of massive overreach by recess appointing Richard Cordray as the nationís chief consumer financial protection watchdog, the truth is that Obama has used his recess appointment power very sparingly. After todayís appointment, President Obama will have made a total of 29 recess appointments. By comparison, George W. Bush made 171 recess appointments; Bill Clinton made 139 recess appointments; George H.W. Bush made 77 recess appointments; and Ronald Reagan made 243. When you divide these numbers by the number of years each man spent in the White House, it reveals that Obama is far and away the least likely president to invoke this power:

Looks like the repubs can't claim that he is abusing the power to make recess appointments.

1. Since when have facts mattered to Republicans?

" Looks like the repubs can't claim that he is abusing the power to make recess appointments. "

They'll claim it anyway

10. Fact do matter when liars are hit across the head with facts.

It is time for us to hit republicans across the head with facts and don't stop hitting them with facts.

15. In a similar vein to my first question then:

Since when have Democrats (those in power and with a pulpit to speak from) called out Republicans on factual errors?

22. This is the true question

The media too. They do an interview, a lie is told (one that I the viewer know is a lie), and the reporter accepts it as fact and moves on.

Its like we are afraid to call foul on anything they say. This is why they can win.

2. I would be estactic if he had made many more today

and even more in the future. Today was good but
should have filled a few more especially with how the Senate is...

That's part of the game.

Remember Bolton in the UN? He's equal to 200 recess appoints today.

Obama needs to become average not the least in history...

3. the Repubs have protected against recess appts by holding pro forma sessions during recesses

Since Obama was elected. They are trying to block this appt too, for the same reason, but Obama, bless his heart, is finally getting the message to just DO something instead of waiting for the correct protocol to do anything. They wilkl use this against him as an illegtal power play, they are already saying it.

17. Exactly. He

was able to get in two key recess appointment, Craig Becker to the NLRB and Donald Berwick to the CMS, which is why I suspect Republicans became determined to block others. They were hell bent on blocking several of Obama's nominees, Goodwin Liu, Peter Diamond and Elizabeth Warren.

6. Obama needs to stop being so timid

If the Pukies can make these appointments, so can he. There is nothing to be afraid of.

8. Doesn't all this constitute some kind of malfeasance?

I just heard on the radio that the Senate has been holding pro forma sessions with the express purpose of preventing an appointment being made. While it's their right to withhold consent if the prospective appointment is unqualified or otherwise unacceptable, surely it is improper for them block an appointment for the sole purpose of obstructing the function of government. Now they are holding sessions just so that the positions will remain vacant. That has to be improper in some way. Of course, I don't think that stops Obama from making the appointments. A thirty second session with only one member in attendance cannot hold appoint hearings, so essential Congress is out.

Anyway, this has to be a huge boon for the Democratic efforts in the upcoming Congressional elections. The number of actions taken in the past two years by the Republicans in Congress for the sole purpose of impeding the normal function of government is staggering. I think they can't help but garner a reputation as Nihilists.

These men are cowards, Donny....

13. I believe that the number isnt because he is less likely to do them but rather

because the republicans didnt give him as many chances to exercise the power because they were being obstructionists.

16. However!!! The media coverage of this most recent one far exceeds any other in known history.

Obama's appointment of Richard Cordray was the top story throughout the day. The media is full of a bunch of biased assholes. They never covered Bush's recessed appointments like this. What fuckers. But I'm not telling you anything you already knew. Just venting. I hate the bias.

18. This dust-up over appointments is just the Republicans getting mad because they were bested

The obstructionist Republicans met their match with our President, and he showed them the losing side of Constitutional law.

Republicans really hate it when they get clearly beaten by superior intelligence.

21. Unfortunately, "the media reported that Obama has made more recess appointments than any president"

... will also be true just as soon as one person in the media makes that claim. The fact that the claim is false will not change the fact that it was claimed.

And they will be called on that ... the first half dozen times they do it. But eventually we will tire of repeating the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over again and stop. While they will continue repeating the lie over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over
