I just shut down a group of akin apologists.
I was headed to my vehicle to store a couple articles that I had printed out for later use. One of the documents was the draft language of the 2012 gop platform.
As I passed the "smoker's table", I could hear the (male and female) apologists saying his comments were "not reflective of mainstream gop thought" and were "clearly the comments of a conservative outlyer" because "no republican would deny a woman an abortion in the case of rape."
I respond: "Really? Does the 2012 gop platform reflect the position of the gop mainstream? What about the position of the named gop VP candidate ... Would that refect mainstream gop thought?
Here read the section on abortion ... it mirrors the language of the Sanctity of Human Life Act of 2009 that was sponsored by akin AND ryan; neither of which allow for a rape exception."
One of them actual took and read the document. While I could smell his mental clutch burning out as he looked to explain it away, the look on his face was priceless!

(35,658 posts)He had the platform in his hand, in writing.
He might have been able to articulate it in speech, but it had a double whammy with being backed up in writing.
Fortuitous!

(16,113 posts)they didn't seem to be trying to excuse anything he did. It sounds more like they were trying to distance themselves (and the repuke party) from those comments. A party's platform should reflect the position of their mainstream, but that doesn't mean it necessarily does.
Good for you to point out that their party's platform DOESN'T reflect what they believe, but these sound like people who already disagreed with Akin and Ryan's position.

(31,849 posts)They WERE trying to distance themselves from akin; but these people who disagree with akin and ryan's position because they didn't know they were the same.
That's stage II of the Democratic message.

(7,865 posts)I was even a bit floored by this whole debacle and bought into the idea that there was no way that this could be the GOP mainstream. I think it would be more accurate to say that the GOP mainstream has no idea how far to the right their party has drifted.
But again, Great Job! Keep up the good work.

(6,747 posts)of you carrying a printed gop platform to your car and running into gop apologists! Providence!

(31,849 posts)The odds are pretty good!
I regularly print out information that I plan to review at home.
In order to get it to my car, I have to walk past the smoker's table ... which is always full of rw government workers, enjoying their lunch time break.
They are always talking "politics" (read: how terrible President Obama is; how they REALLY want smaller government and fewer regulations and lower taxes ... Oh yeah, they also complain about not having been given a raise in 5 years!
True to rwing thought, they can't seem to make the smaller government and lower tax/No raise for government workers connection.)

(111,252 posts)but I imagine that matters as little to you as it does to me.
I do love to see them have to reboot when their brains seize up over being presented with their own candidate's stance on issues. That Republican equivalent of the BSOD is always gratifying.

(31,849 posts)I'd have to live through it, too; and I'm not ready for that.
I don't have a 6 month supply of non-perishible foodstuffs and water, I don't live in a place that is strategically defensible and I don't have, quite, enough guns and ammo to keep my family's food and water.
