Growing Number Of Conservatives Call On Akin To Withdraw After ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comments

Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP Senate candidate in Missouri, set off a firestorm today after claiming that women who are victims of “legitimate rape” don’t usually become pregnant because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Now, several conservative writers have started calling for Akin to withdraw from his Senate race:

One of the first was Reihan Salam, a prominent author at the conservative flagship National Review:

A couple of quick facts. He's a seated elected Rep. He's 8 or 9 pts up in the polls. Lone_Star_Dem Aug 2012 #6
Then let's hope this costs him at least 5 or 6 points in the polls. n/t A Simple Game Aug 2012 #8

And have the media get all over this fool as the poster child for today's GOP.

I want to see HIM on the ballot and suffer ten weeks of pure Hell.

I want to see how many conservatives try to defend his remarks - That fat fucking bloated pig/drug addict from Cape Girardeau comes to mind.

Any woman that votes for a republican must be crazy anyway.

Edited because I'm so gaddamned angry.

It could be fun dogging him with this every day of the campaign--never let him get away from it, or talk about anything else! This could take down the whole Repug ticket if we work it hard enough!!

BTW, here's a link to donate to his opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill:

That's where he's coming from- even rape victims aren't to be trusted because they're women and women are evil baby killers.

Oh, and he's in Missouri I believe.

They seem to, by majority, approve of him. Why, is a mystery, but I've personally witnessed as bad if not worse.

Partisan beliefs can be enough to overcome even this level of stupid. At least in some states.

McCaskill can use this to her advantage for sure.

Still, it's really hard to run as a Dem in a state like Missouri and win. Hard, but not impossible!

She needs our support and the support of the DNC to pull this off. I'm behind her.

He had a boost from winning the primary and hadn't opened his mouth until this week. The Republican primary was a close race and he managed to pull it off.

Everyone knows Claire-she's been a target in this state for many years, long before she became a senator. Akin isn't that well known outside his region.

Claire's camp actively campaigned against the other Republican candidates during the primary, pulling up every bit of nasty info they could find. When it came to Akin, they lobbed a slow softball over the plate, referring to him as "too conservative for the state". That's all they said about him and now we know why.

Bravo to the McCaskill camp for knowing how to pick the candidate! Now that he's opening his mouth they'll be able to use every last bit of that info against him, including the rape comments, the comments about ending school lunches because the government "shouldn't be in education" and the comments about actively ending Medicare because the government "shouldn't be in health care".

Isn't Akin a member of the House Republicans, just like Ryan? Aren't they Tea Party brethren.
