A message to the 20/30-somethings who are not "enthusiastic" about voting for Obama

Maybe 4 years ago you were "over-the-moon" for the guy and thought he would miraculously solve all your problems, and now you are miffed because it didn't magically happen.

You may be thinking that you'll sit this one out, or maybe even vote for Mittens.

Here's something to consider:

You better love love love your parents and older siblings, because sooner than you think, you will be older (time speeds up as you age..trust me), and when you are trying to buy that first house, or need help getting a nice car, or maybe you need help with a down payment on a house, those are the people you will probably approach first.

Those people got "creamed" in the "crash of '08-09"
Most of them have little or no "money in the bank"
Most of them have no defined-benefit pensions
The ones who DO (did?) have them have seen them shrink dramatically or be dumped into PBGC (google that one)

The Romney crew is planning to make sure those people (the under-55's) do NOT have a secure Social Security/Medicare system waiting for them down the road.

These people will (if they have not already) be facing continued layoffs/downsizes/offshorings of their jobs, so their incomes are going to be further stressed....

which means....

They will most-likely be needing YOU to "fill the gaps" for them as they age, and there's a good chance that they will be leaving you little more than a mailbox full of bills.

They may be living WITH you for many years of their old age, since Medicaid is also on the chopping block too. Medicaid is how "ordinary people" fund convalescent/nursing home care for their aged.

Our human society is all based on shared, inter-generational kindnesses/responsibilities.

Moms & Dads know that taking care of their children is necessary, even if that 8 yr old cannot pay for his room & board.

That "mouthy" teenager who sometimes tells you that he /she "hates" you, still needs your support..and you give it.

The greatest gift a parent gives a child is their sense of independence and competency, so that when they grow up, they are capable, happy, productive people.

When children move out and become independent, those next years in parents' lives are crucial. Those are the years they can accumulate & prepare for their retirement, but when they are still helping their children, and then they see their own jobs disappearing, they are between a rock and a hard place...and most defer their own needs to continue to "help the kids".

Parents do not "want" to rely financially on their grown children, but if they have no other choice, they must.

Some "kids" will be in just as dire of straits as their folks, and all will suffer, and most will shoulder the responsibilities (even if they hate doing it), and some will shirk altogether, but most will want to help, and will think back to the "good old days" when Mom & Dad would have at least had Medicare & Social Security and might have been able to live independently in their old age..

That's what's at stake.

1. Paul Ryan's Medicare plan might not affect your parents or grandparents, but it will affect YOU.

That's what I call them...and yes, I have children in this generation - you just can't get through to them. They can't stop texting long enough to hear a word you say !

If people who were stupid had not voted for Ronald Reagan this world would have been a whole lot better for kids these days.

Romney/Ryan are just another Ronald Reagan style of governing, which, simply put, is: We got ours, screw you.

A vote for Obama is a vote for kids. A vote for R/R is a vote for the old rich bastards that have ruined this country.

... three or four generations living in a house/property. Even with Social Security that is happening.

Throwing around the $6,500 Medicare figure like it's peanuts. It's $500 a month ... half of the current Social Security check many seniors have to live on ... just for health care. It's more than some folks house or car payment.

I wonder if they have the luxury of thinking about retirement and believing that what happens now ensures things way into the future.

10. Also, not voting means you're the guest of honor at the Republican screwfest afterward.

No one cares about the issues of people who don't vote.
