Tom Morello: 'Paul Ryan Is the Embodiment of the Machine Our Music Rages Against'
Rage Against the Machine's guitarist blasts Romney's VP pick and unlikely Rage fan
By Tom Morello August 16, 2012 6:44 PM ET Last week, Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan, the Republican architect of Congress's radical right-wing budget plan, as his running mate. Ryan has previously cited Rage Against the Machine as one of his favorite bands. Rage guitarist Tom Morello responds in this exclusive op-ed. Paul Ryan's love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades. Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn't understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteen but doesn't understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine. Ryan claims that he likes Rage's sound, but not the lyrics. Well, I don't care for Paul Ryan's sound or his lyrics. He can like whatever bands he wants, but his guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent is antithetical to the message of Rage. I wonder what Ryan's favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of "Fuck the Police"? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings! ... http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/tom-morello-paul-ryan-is-the-embodiment-of-the-machine-our-music-rages-against-20120816#ixzz23lFFD5L3

Tom Morello is a very bright guy and he actually would make a good politician, he would never do it however because he prefers agitating from the outside rather than engaging in party politics.

9. How can one like a band but not enjoy listening to their lyrics?
|
Or even pay attention to them? I can understand why Ryan would say he likes them...he is part of Gen X after all. But still. I think he is a liar.
I have been listening to Rage since I was in high school in the 90's and I totally love Tom Morello. Unlike Ryan, I actually love Morello's lyrics. |

20. Morello didn't write most of RATM's lyrics
|
Zack De La Rocha did. On their second album, for instance, Zack was given all of the lyrical credits. That's why so many of their songs are about the Zapatista movement, which was De La Rocha's pet cause.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021141545 This one - uh - shall we say - "dogs" romney! On edit - And don't you love how Tom Morello lumped CHARLES MANSON in with chris christie and paul ryan?!! Birds of a feather. They think they love the music but don't understand it. |

18. I would disagree with him on one point
|
That Ryan doesn't understand Rage or that Christie doesn't understand Springsteen (I'll give him Manson and the Beatles).
I think both of these guys understand the lyrics of these artists perfectly well. They know they don't stand for what the artist stands for and they don't really care, because they like the music. This kind of thing is quite common. Lyrics are very imoprtant, but I think the music is what usually moves people. Bruce could be singing about cauliflower and it would still move people, because he's a talented guy. Take gangster rap. I think Dr. Dre is a great producer and Snoop is a great rapper. But I don't support slapping hos, calling all women bitches, or shooting somebody because they looked at you the wrong way. In fact, I abhor all of that behavior. But I like the music because the people who made it are good at what they do. I don't think you have to buy the lyrics or even the message to be a fan of a musical artist. Music is for everybody, after all, because it doesn't discriminate. It's there for you whenever you want it. If Rage Against the Machine didn't have or desire mass appeal, they never would have signed a major-label recording contract. Of course, he does have a point. Rage and Bruce do have messages and they are totally at odds with what Ryan and Christie do. But I've never faulted people for liking what they like. Unless it's Madonna . . . |

Last edited Fri Aug 17, 2012, 01:50 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Seriously...WTF is it with these RWers anyway. It's like they live in backwards, upside-down, opposites world. Everything they say or do is exactly the opposite of what they stand for. In this case "antithetical" is the perfect way to put it. I really think that RWers are incapable of understanding or appreciating nuance, and I think it's genetic...seriously. Look at the high percentage of conservatives who think Colbert is really one of them...totally incapable of understanding satire or irony for that matter.

|
This video is even more relevant today than it was when it was released more than a decade ago, and at the 2:56 mark you can hear one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. The New York Stock Exchange really was shut down during the filming of this video and Micheal Moore was dragged away in handcuffs. |
