Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) has signed an executive order that attempts to thwart President Obamas immigration directive extending temporary work permits to more than a million undocumented immigrants. The policy, which was announced in June, goes into effect on Wednesday.
The document directs state agencies to deny drivers licenses and other public benefits to young illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations and directs state agencies to start emergency rulemaking processes as necessary to implement her order. From the order:

Arizona Gov. Bars State Benefits For DREAMers Aided By Obama Program
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) signed an executive order Wednesday that denies state benefits to the children of illegal immigrants given temporary permanent resident status under a DREAM-act like program created by President Obama.
KTAR reports Brewer's order prevents those given permanent residency status under the Obama administration program "from receiving public benefits, a driver's license or a state identification card."
The order closed by saying that the more than 80,000 Deferred Action recipients, should the action be permitted to continue without intervention, would have "significant and lasting impacts on the Arizona budget, its health care system and additional public benefits that Arizona taxpayers fund."

(37,648 posts)they couldn't get before, as non-citizens. That's my understanding.
The paper they get means they can't be arrested and/or deported for two years or something, and then they get to apply again. And they get a Social Security #, I think.
If there's overlap, I guess there will be a lawsuit, and the Supreme Court will decide.
