What an eleventh-hour, hail-mary, fly-by-night operation...

Been listening to the MSNBC "breaking news" coverage and then to MSNBC Weekend's Alex Witt (and even Fox intermittently).

They're all trying to hide their astonishment, but making a bad job of it.

I get the distinct impression that the Ryan choice is nothing but a desperate emergency response to some really dire internal polling results.

That they would roll this guy out at 8:30 on a Saturday morning, during the once every-four-year spectacle of the Olympics finale, speaks of disarray and panic.

I can't believe this was their original game plan...

2. The original game plan was overly simplistic because Mitt was cocky

So sure he was that his personal superiority to Obama would be plain as day to economically desperate Americans, the same people he's been rolling over all his life.

But then the punches started coming. He'd seen that before, having run against Teddy Kennedy, but that was a Kennedy, a fellow aristocrat worthy of at least some respect. No way Obama could hit better and harder, no way the American people would buy it...

4. Spot on analysis, BG...

"So sure he was that his personal superiority to Obama would be plain as day to economically desperate Americans..."

"No way Obama could hit better and harder, no way the American people would buy it"

I bet he doesn't know what's hit him! Probably reeling from the blows--made this choice in a panic.

6. His game plan was that as a rich white guy everyone would kneel before him the moment he announced

his candidacy. "Behold! I am come! To save you from the Black Man and those who care about the poor. I promise to cut my own taxes and reduce middle class workers to servitude. For lo, I shall do for this country as Bain Capital did for the companies I bought. And I shall profit greatly. So let it be written. So let it be done."

14. The guy has been running for office for ~19 years and only won once.

He then didn't run for reelection and left office with an approval rating of ~34%.

If he is still that delusional, after his record of almost total failure, he needs the best psychiatrists money can buy. Good thing he can afford them.

I think he does politics as a hobby since he hasn't had a real job since 1999-2002 (we don't really know when he left that job). He is up against professionals now and is out of his league.

30. As goes the hackneyed saying:

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result"

There's some real casework here for a good therapist or shrink. Major Oedipal issues in Mitt's past, I think.

My exact thought when I heard the news. They're going down and this is a last-ditch attempt to "win." I mean, why feign an image of political savvy when you can put all your right-wing poison into one vessel just in case you actually pull it off. Like the kid who grabs all the cookies in the cookie jar instead of just one because he knows he has almost no chance of getting out of the kitchen unnoticed by mom.

Besides, there's always Diebold and voter suppression...

32. First question I want to ask is how many tax returns did RYAN have to pony up?

When the Catholic Bishops don't like the Ryan budget, that's problematic for Ryan and RMoney!

He'd be longing for the days that they talk about his taxes...if he could get them off that subject.

I think they're all of a piece--one lies about his taxes, the other tries to get them lowered for rich folk like his New Boss!

15. The tax talk just won't stop...

So it's time to move up the VP announcement and make it Ryan for the surprise! factor.

It won't stop the taxes/millions/offshore accounts nightmare that Willard has been unable to shut down, it will give him a few days break from it, a week at most.

It will temporarily mollify some of the tea baggers and they will come out and vote for these idiots so they'll get some poll bumps.

It won't win them the election.

With any luck it will not only dig the Republican loss even deeper for this year in Florida (among other places), but poison Ryan's political future so he won't be able to get any traction on 2016. People have some strange ideas about Ryan. They're about to get enlightened.

to the late and tortured Seamus), or he'll be regarded as the "hero" who did all he could, but was bested by forces beyond his control, to rescue a dogshit campaign.

Good thing Ryan has what's called a "strong nose"--he'll need it for all the brown-nosing he's going to have to do in the next eighty some odd days.

a Saturday in the middle of August? The last weekend of the Olympics?

They should have had this ready to go 3 weeks ago to kill of the tax return story and they clearly waited a few extra days so that Ryan could finish his vacation.

Newsies like us will follow this but for most people the first reaction will be "Who is Paul Ryan?" the second reaction will be "Is he old enough to be President?"

I'm sure they would've preferred to wait for the Olympics to be over and to have the media stage to themselves.

The whold thing just smells of disorganized planning on the fly.

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/07/13169966-paul-ryan-set-to-take-vacation-amid-vp-fervor?lite

OAK CREEK, WI — As speculation over whom Mitt Romney might choose as a running mate reaches a fever pitch, one of the Republicans rumored to be on the short list — Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan — is going on vacation.

Ryan told reporters here that he is taking his family to Colorado, beginning Saturday, for a weeklong trip during the summer congressional recess.

"I'm just doing my August schedule as I planned my August," Ryan said, adding that he will first spend the next two days campaigning in Northwest Wisconsin for local candidates.

Friday, Ryan said he will spend the day in his native Janesville preparing for his trip by getting his tent and backpack ready.

Because of the budget and the fact that Ryan brings absolutely zero to Romney's policies.

Polls will dive, and the only way Romney wins if the black boxes give them the "edge".

It is not going to happen. Romney is so out of touch and so unpopular, that he is the Lurch the Fucking Stiff™.

This has been a clumsy, ill-conceived, amateurish roll-out. It resembles the rest of the Romney campaign's mediocrity and shallowness. You hit the nail on the head . . . this is as an inept and clueless presentation as is reflected by the candidate, himself. It's stunning in it's incompetence.
