Obama changed the rug, couches and coffee table from what I can tell. Simple and contemporary. Bush Jr's office in 2006...

Our current King (Harald V of Norway) learned to use a bike, in the hallways of the White House as he, and his mother and the rest of the royal family was guest of FDR when they first arrived to the US... And it exist a few pictures I believe, where he (a 5 year old) is being learned to bike - not less by the US president.. Our late King Olav V, who then was crown prince of Norway, had befriended FDR when they was on a sort of "official/un-official" royal visit in the "Norwegian colonies" in the US in 1939. And our Crown Prince and FDR was really getting along, and as a result, when germany invaded Norway in 1940, FDR invited our crown princess - and the royal family to USA, where they could be safe.. And they did, our king have often spoken about how great it was to be in a country, where he could more or less live as a normal kid. And he have also as crown prince, and later as King, making it a priority to have good friendship with the US.. Even when "W" was president.. As he know, president comes and goes, but relationships is forever.. So you Do have some classy presidents over there Diclotican |

Jup, Norwegian by birth and by living (and in fact, my family have more or less being living on the same place since they came here to take over a farm in the mid 1300s.. Right as the plague (Black Death) was making its way over the country - but the family somehow managed to survive, up to our own time I think your current president is a great president - hated by the extreme right (but that goes with the territory I guess) and at least respected by the rest - and loved by many.. And even though I believe the US president have to be secure in office, the current President have been more open to everyone, specially the kids than I believe most US presidents have been.. John Beidens playing with the kids a couple of weeks ago was really a classy act.. He IS the Vice President of the United States - but not bigger than he could play around with kids - and get soaked by water as the kids play with him... And it also looks like he had a great time, playing with the kids - and getting wet to the bones... And your current President and first lady - WOW what a classy par... If I have to say it, Michelle Obama looks stunning in her dresses - and it also looks like the two are in deep love with each other when they are working together.. I just wish more americans could se they as they really are, not just as black persons, who for the moment occupy the White House... One of my favs of all time, have been history. Not just our own history, but history in general.. And it maybe help when you are living in a small country like our own, to learn history - I might also be that lucky that I was living in a house where books was common and where it was a lot of history books... And I also was a happy reader too boot.. So it was just easy to learn about history, as the books was there... I was kind of a lonely boy when growing up, so books was one of the "best" friends I had.. So I guess most of it, comes from the fact that I learned to read fast, and to remember what I was reading... And had a keen interest for history to.. Diclotican |

I'm a lurker And thank you for your kind word. I have been working hard om my syntax - and hopefully it is making some progress.. And I also use the "spelling check" often, to get the right word when I doesn't.. But then again, as you use a language, you tend to also understand what syntax to use... It is not that difficult really... It just takes time to learn how to write.. Specially when it is not my own language.. Diclotican |

Well i try to do my best, even when it might not be correct english. I'm not sure if it is correct american english, but I do try to at least write correct english - and then hopefully at least be able to make myself understood by most... And english are not that difficult, if you just "crack the code" and use it regularly over time. Anyway, I'm better in typing than in speaking.. I can not exactly hide the fact that I'm from Norway.. I do my family's geneology and traced my 9th great grandfather to Wegeningen, Nederland. His name was Gerrit van Wegenen, born about 1602. His son Gerrit Gerritsen came to New Jersey, USA, sometime after 1656. |

I know, one thing is to learn english in school, as a second language (and I was not exactly the best student) But another thing to learn it again - and to use english in real life, so to say.. And as the time was going, and I was starting to get a grasp on english in a more fluent way, it also got more easy to use it... I think... But it is nice, that I am Crystal clear now then - and you do not need to re-read it anymore... Hopefully i can hold it up this way for a long time.P.... And it is also nice to read, that some enjoy my writings. Genealogy is inter sting, even if just for the fun of it. It is kind of finding out of our roots... AHa, he was one of the "original" emigrants to the US then, as he came to what become british colonies already in 1656, thats longer than most americans who live in the US today can claim... Many emigrated to the america, because of religious grounds - Europe in the 1600th century could be a nasty place to be, if you happened to not be of the same faith as the kings or great princes... And it could be very difficult, if you was an protestant in a Catholic country - or a Catholic in a protestant country.... The whole affair is a bloody, nasty affair where great politic, and religious fanaticism really got the upper hand for most of the 1600s.. But it was also a century where Europe started to be more than its smaller parts... art, literary, knowledge was rising - and even commons now had a grasp of reading and writing as schools was making more and more people able to do more with themself... Edit: I'm afraid the US is reverting to the religious fanaticism of 17th century Europe. |

You can absolutely learn a lot about history, by doing genealogy.. And it is also interesting to learn how our ancestors lived their life - what they was worried about, what they cared for... And what they Don't cared to much about... Well many of the signs about religious fanaticism from the 17th century is clear for many - but the US can still learn from its mistake, and doesn't give into it all again.. But then again, it have always been a strike in the american Psyche, who have been kept under control, until the last 30 or so year, where religion, specially the more fanatical ones, have been made more and more mainstream.. And it looks like the more extreme are being elected into office this days... It is like looking to a dark room, you do not know what is there, but you are not sure if it is good or bad.. And the light is out... Diclotican |

The only way Romney/Ryan can win this election is if they steal it. And the way so many of our voting booths can be rigged, I am a bit fearful. Thanks so much for your comments and support of President Obama!!! |

A presidency with Romney and Ryan would destroy whatever of the social fabric who once was the hallmark of the United States.. If they got elected, they would turn US into a horrible nation, where the super-rich live a life, who are not even possible for 99 percent of the population.. It would be so bad, that an revolution would be the end-game of that experience... It would be a very bad experience for the most of the american population, even if a presidency of Romney/Ryan would just have 4 years to do what they want.. The US of today, is so different from what it once was.. The ultra-wing conservatives in the US have turned GOP, and the whole ideology into something I doubt many of the republicans of old days would recognize as conservative at all.. What the current leadership in the Republican Party really want, is to turn the clock back at least 200 year, where the rich was powerfully, and the peasants mear tools in their shed... What they want, is to turn US back to a age where it was difficult to be "commoner", far worse than Dickers could write about in his many books... No social net, or anything near public health care. Even Medicare and Medicaid would be out of the window.. Mr Ryan have been pretty clear about THAT... I just hope that President Obama would win another term... And that he somehow manage to turn around US to a more sane country.. If I had been eligible to vote, I would have voted Obama on a straight Democratic ticket... He is maybe not what I wanted/hoped him to be - but he is so much better than anything the republicans can ever try to show as a candidate.... |

President who gets chased around his office by a little girl - boy I bet the righties are just tying themselves up in knots trying to work out how they can use this negatively.
Gotta love our President - he definitely has a gift with children. |

There's just something about a man that relates well to children and likes being around them that is very endearing to people. Personally, I think it's one of the things that make him high on the "likability" scale. Maybe it has something to do with caring about what we're leaving to the next generation.

I had forgotten that precious picture. Thank you for the "memory". I had to put that in quotes because I wasn't quite born when that picture was taken. I was born a mere three months before the pictures that don't bring back good "memories" came.

but I have to admit, those couches are Fugly. Sometimes I wish the 70s would just die the death they deserve. Actually, though, I have a Kitchen aide blender in that very same avocado color. Those things are workhorses - never die. I wonder if the current ones are so solid?

Last edited Fri Aug 10, 2012, 06:32 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2) My hubby just gifted me with a new monitor and it's way brighter than my last one. It may be that I don't have the color settings quite right. I'll check on that because they are positively 70s avocado on my screen.
Edited to add: I'm not sure what I'm trying to avoid on the home front, but after checking my settings, I went and found a couple of other pictures of those couches and they are less avocado, but not quite brown. Love the accent pillows though. They have Michelle Obama written all over them. Obama's a great guy but Michelle is the one with the fashion touch. Unlike her predecessor. Now, I'm going to log off and figure out why I would spend so much time on a couch in the White House. LOL 2nd edit: No, not ON the couch. Oh, forget it. |
