Idaho commission approves "patriotic" charter school supported by Romney campaign finance chairman
A new Idaho Falls public charter school, calling itself the "patriotic choice for parents" with a focus on "individual freedoms and free market economics," was given a vote of approval by the Idaho Public Charter School Commission Tuesday, in spite of not garnering support from its own school district.
The Idaho Falls Post Register reports that the American Heritage Charter School will open in the fall of 2013, offering kindergarten through eighth-grade classes. The eastern Idaho school is modeled after a similar public charter school in Gooding, according to American Heritage founder Deby Infanger.
Infanger told the Post Register that the Idaho Falls school district declined to approve the new charter, so she and her team turned to the newly formed state commission,
Infanger also confirmed to the Post Register that her charter school has support from Idaho billionaire Frank VanderSloot, national campaign finance co-chairman for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. Infanger said VanderSloot is donating use of property and even a building to house the new school.
