Last edited Fri Aug 10, 2012, 08:41 AM - Edit history (1)

I edited this post as it seems to have had the opposite effect of what I meant it for... I certainly did NOT intend to enrage/insult our GLBT brothers and sisters, that's the farthest intent from my mind.

My sincere apologies to any and all who were offended, as I stand proudly beside those in the GLBT community and fight for equal rights for ALL human beings....

Peace,

Ghost

And we don't import oil from them. Either way it's a lot easier to not eat somewhere than to not drive anywhere

It's also not just an opinion that's the problem the owner donates money to hate groups. If it was just his opinion and he didn't spend millions to fight against civil rights, it won't be as big of a problem

But you have to pick your battles. Chic fil a will not go out of business because of this and the owner's standard of living won't change. But hopefully this will bring more awareness and support for gay rights. Polling indicates that younger generations are more acceptable. Bigots like him are a dying breed.

...sandwiches. So I really see no correlation. However, I wish there was an alternative to American dependence on Saudi oil. I truly do because I find MANY POLICIES of Saudi Arabia repugnant, particularly their virulent wahabist fanaticism, especially toward women and gays.

That said, aren't you oh-so-clever with your thinly veiled homophobic content.

total US EXPORTS for both crude and refined product: 99 million barrels in May, YTD about 485M.

Total US imports, including crude and refined, for the same period? an average of 340 million barrels a month, year to date, 1.975 BILLION. Four times the amount exported.

inclined.

But, I won't be eating at Chick fil A, because Cathy sees fit to buy superPAC voice to promote and basically sell political influence to violate the CIVIL RIGHTS of LGTBQ Americans. Cathy wants to create a permanent under-class of Americans to DISCRIMINATE against them and interfere with their rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and that's why I will be active against Chick fil A in the streets, NEVER eat any of their food and encourage others to stand against their discriminatory behavior.

46. I am helping a Gay & Straight Alliance that's based in one of our universities. This work feels good

because it really is fundamental to who we are as Americans. I like the fact that we are resisting the involvement of certain churches in our government and that our diligence in supporting LGBTQs' demand for justice for their own really does help to protect justice for all. We also live in a pretty racially segregated city, so defending LGBTQ Civil Rights sends a message to everyone that discrimination can be more than racial and people have a civil responsibility to resist it at ANY opportunity.

29. It's false equivalency AND a False Charge of Hypocrisy

False equivalency AND false charge of hypocrisy: (1) we don't always know where the gas in our car comes from and likely it comes from Canada or even here in the U.S.--we still do produce oil--so the two are not necessarily equal. (2) Unlike a chicken sandwich from a particular place--which we can do without--we can't always do without gas--though many of us may be trying by supporting solar power--and politicians like Obama who are trying to free us from foreign oil (false equivalency AND false charge of hypocrisy). (3) If we vote in a president and other politicians who are pro-gay, then they can change the homophobia in other countries--but if places like Cick-Fil give our money to people who hate gays, then those in office won't even try to change those other countries polices. Whether we buy oil or not won't change the policies of other countries nearly as much as a president will who can give and withhold foreign aid. Hence, by making sure our money goes to pro-gay politicians, we are helping to stop homophobia elsewhere (again, false charge of hypocrisy).

that doesn't mean that cutting down, combining trips, carpooling, and staying at home more don't mean anything at all.

Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good as an excuse to either not do anything at all, or to assert some position over those who don't meet somebody's definition of significance for whatever reason. Something is always more than nothing and more is always more than less even if it isn't all.

31. Not a whole lot of oil used in the US comes from the middle east

Europe and Asia are more dependent on middle eastern oil. Our number one source is domestic and numbers two and three are Canada and Mexico.

That being said, oil is fungible, so we are in a sense just as dependent on Saudi oil as anybody else is, because what happens there affects the global supply and prices. But I don't think a whole lot of Saudi oil ends up here. Some probably does, but our supply is pretty diversified.

34. I see your point. Valid, too, until you consider the difference. Why this is apples & oranges.

Chik-fil-A is a company. An American corporation.

Saudi Arabia is a country that is not our own and over which we have no control.

Chick-fil-A brought itself into the political spotlight, and seeks to fight gay marriage through the hefty contributions to groups who work to fight gay marriage.

Saudi Arabia is not involved in gay rights in America in any way.

In other words, it's not what Chik-fil-A BELIEVES. It is its actions that caused the anger and boycotting.

Similarly, it is not what Saudi Arabia BELIEVES. It is its actions, or rather the fact that it has done nothing, to affect gay rights in America, which has resulted in little anger and no boycotting.

Two very different things. Besides, boycotting countries by American citizens doesn't really work. Remember the boycott by Tea Partiers of Perrier water from France?

To me, the OP was immediately identifiable as invalid bigotry, with no point to be seen for any span of time, and was undeserving of even the slightest hint of defense.

Couple that with Honeycombe8's earlier question, "What's wrong with it?", the fact that the OP has posted at least a couple homophobic statements in the past, and I hope my response becomes understandable.

and #2, please point out these "at least a couple of homophobic statements in the past" that I have supposedly posted, otherwise retract your assertion and admit that you're full of shit, as usual. NOW would be a good time to do so...

If memory serves correctly, You're the guy who claims to have served in Viet Nam, yet can't give a specific answer as to *where* you served, aren't you?

You're still a joke, one who should remain in the 9-11 dungeon, where you fit in nicely with those of your same ilk.....

114. If you have to ask, etc.

But first,
A. I never claimed to have served in Vietnam. I was born in the late 1960s, and I did reveal that. Your memory doesn't serve correctly.
B. This thread already has more than enough explanation of why the OP is bigoted.

C. I didn't make a point of recording each of your many offensive posts before they were deleted, so this weak evidence will have to do:

Ghost in the Machine:
*If* I were to threaten you, I'd do it straight up. I'm not afraid of you, or anyone else for that matter. I've put people in the ground before, you think I need to hide behind "veiled threats" on the fucking internet? You need to get a life somewhere outside of your fantasy world, son.... and you need to do it quickly. The *only* threats you have gotten are in your paranoid, delusional mind, which is brought on by your persecution complex. "Wha wha wha, he's picking on me!" I bet you got your ass beat in school a lot as a kid, huh?

You don't know *who* the fuck I am, boy, so let me fill you in a little bit. I'm an ex Aryan and an ex One Percenter. If you don't know what that is, look it up. I've killed more people in one day than some of our soldiers have in 2 or 3 tours in Iraq.

There's standing orders to kill me on sight, with a $100,000 bounty on my head. Do *you* think I run scared? Not hardly. I post my name and photo all over the internet. My address and phone number is available to anyone who wants to search for it. All I can tell *anyone* who wants to collect that bounty is "BRING IT"... I've never run from anything in my life, and don't intend to start now.

The best thing I can tell you to do is to drop your little persecution complex, change out of your little girl panties and MAN UP, young'un...

You don't know what the fuck a "threat" is, boy... it's past your level of understanding, just like construction and logic...

And I'm out.

Try reading it from outside your own perspective. Keep in mind that only one homophobic asshole owns the corporation that makes Chick-Fil-A food, but Canada, the USA, Great Britain and scores of other countries that don't hate gays produce gas for use in motor vehicles.

If your intent wasn't to enrage our GLBT crew, and I do not doubt your sincerity, the best thing to do is just pull the plug on this awful mess. Memorialize your OP in a final post and shut the thing down.

It's your thread, you can do as you like, but I don't think this kind of right wing and false equivalence theme elevates this site in the slightest.

106. No, I support equal rights for every individual, regardless of race, sex, sexual orientatation or

any other adjective you wish to make up. Homosexuality isn't a choice, it's how a person is born. Just as no one *decides* to be straight, no one *decides* to be gay, bi, lesbian or anything else. We are ALL just who WE are, in all our glory, free to love who we want, and should have the basic human right to marry the person we fall in love with, and wish to spend the rest of our lives with. No form of government, religion, or any other entity should be allowed to stand in the way and stop that.

Is that clear enough to you?

Peace,

Ghost

119. "What was your intent?"

It was something I felt like posting at the time... the only "intent" that I NEED. I've been a paying member (up until a few months ago) for 6 or 7 years. I post what I want, when I want, and for no other reason than BECAUSE I want to. I certainly don't need the permission/approval of someone who's only been here for 5 months or so....

My best advice to you is to "grow a thicker skin". I've run across many posts I find offensive, for various reasons, over the years. I don't whine about them, or even alert on them, I simply note the difference of opinions that such a large group has, then ignore the post and move on. This is something that might serve you well in your future endeavors here... unless you're some kind of authoritarian personality on an ego trip. No one owes you, or anyone else, an explanation of *why* they post *anything*...

Peace,

Ghost

72. Much of our gas comes from that socialist in Venezuela! We refine his shit!

And a ton of it comes from those socialists up in .... CANADA!!!!!!!! Oh, the horror!!!

http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/america-gas-source.htm

With Americans burning through so much gasoline, it kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it? What are America's gas sources? Where does America get its oil? Well, the answer is a little more complicated than you might think.
America's oil actually comes from a variety of places. In June of 2009, 36 percent of America's oil came from domestic sources. Of that domestically produced oil, 11 percent came from Alaska, while the remaining 89 percent came from various oil fields in the lower 48 states .
A whopping 64 percent of the oil America used in June of 2009 was imported. However, the major source of America's oil imports may surprise you. It's Canada. Twenty-one percent of the oil imported to the United States in June of 2009 came from Canada, making Canada the largest single-country source of foreign oil for the United States. America even imports more oil from Canada than it does all Persian Gulf countries combined; nations from the Persian Gulf region supplied just 13 percent of America's oil in June of 2009 .
Despite Canada (which is stable and friendly to American interests) being the largest foreign source of oil and gas for the United States, Ottawa still doesn't produce the majority of oil America imports. That distinction belongs to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC. The 11 OPEC member nations span the globe and include oil-rich nations like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. In June of 2009, OPEC supplied 40 percent of the oil that was imported to the United States .

What a dumbass, rightwing meme. Saudi Arabians don't own the "trademark" on gas, they didn't invent it, and they don't have a copyright on it--what a "logic fail!" Bet that came straight from the same minds that are managing Twittsy's campaign!

81. It is almost impossible to boycott gas from the middle east.

Some of it is bought on the open market. Gas from Russia that is bought to use in the United States may actually have been bought by Russia from Saudia Arabia. Hess and Citgo seem to use little to no gas from the middle east because they have no operations there. However, if they have a bigger demand and then need to purchase crude oil from another source and then resell it here it can be hard to tell where it originated from. And some stations have no refinery themselves and simply buy the oil from the middle east. It's a stupid and pointless argument because Saudia Arabia is not one company that you can boycott. We don't know where each gas company gets all their oil from because so much of it is mixed from all different sources. But Repubs are not that bright to understand that.

97. Nice twist... Straight from FOX News, I'm guessing?

There are multiple reasons why I won't eat at Chick-Fil-A.

One: they aren't even in my state.

Two: Fast food is not real food.

One point that is being conveniently and most likely deliberately left unstated/understated in this entire nonsense regarding this wannabe "restaurant" is that this is about more than the fact that the loser that owns that dump is an obvious and proud homophobe.

Someone like him would gladly refuse to hire a gay person simply based on their sexual preference. At that point, he is breaking the law. He can say that he has never done such a thing until the cows come home. But someone who would come right out and say what he has, would have no problem breaking the law and firing someone or not hiring them to begin with simply because they are gay.

People can boycott whatever they want. Do I feel that they should vandalize their "restaurants"? No.

I also feel that their employees should not be screamed at by people who are angry at the owner's stupidity. They are just the employees. They are not the ones who shared their hatred for the gay community.

112. It's the false analogy or Non sequitur. n/t

false analogy -- In an analogy, two objects (or events), A and B are shown to be similar. Then it is argued that since A has property P, so also B must have property P. An analogy fails when the two objects, A and B, are different in a way which affects whether they both have property P.

non sequitur ("it does not follow") -- A statement that does not logically follow from what preceded it; a conclusion that does not follow from the premises.

105. Well, tough shit for Chick-Fil-A then

Since I don't really have any say over where my gas comes from, there's not a whole lot I can do to boycott Saudi Arabia, unless I choose to forego gasoline entirely. And I have no intention of doing that.

However, it's very very easy for me to boycott Chick-Fil-A, which is part of the reason I'm going to do it. Nobody said that boycotts have to be morally consistent. Which is why if you're going to do things that stir serious political shit, you'd better have the leverage to keep your customers.
