An Ohio man was arrested Saturday night after he brought a loaded handgun, ammunition and knives into a showing of The Dark Knight Rises at a movie theater in Westlake, Fox 8 in Cleveland reports.
Scott Smith, 37, of nearby North Ridgeville, was charged with six counts of violating Ohio's concealed-carry gun laws, said Westlake police Lt. Ray Arcuri. A manager and security guard at the theater noticed Smith acting oddly and asked to see what was inside the backpack he was carrying.
Inside the bag, the security guard, an off-duty Westlake cop, found a 9-millimeter handgun, two additional ammunition magazines and three knives. The officer found a fourth knife when he frisked Smith.
After the police obtained a search warrant, Arcuri says, authorities found numerous weapons at Smith's home. Police also seized his car and cellphone, which Arcuri said contained hundreds of pictures of guns.

(12,041 posts)I think Holmes did what he did primarily for attention and the Batman opening was the most hyped film opening of the year. In the second film there was a scene in which the joker got arrested and then revealed that he had a bomb set to explode elsewhere in the city and Holmes clearly tried to copy that scene when he rigged his own apartment with bombs. While he did use the second Batman film as influence however I think he primarily did that because he knew it would bring him extra attention, I don't think they are really doing this because of the movie they are just looking for a way to get their name in the news and Batman gets a lot of media attention.

(20,441 posts)Either he was afraid of being shot up in a movie theater and had that stuff with him for "self-defense," or he brought that kind of firepower to kill.
If he wanted to be near his guns while watching a movie with a body count, he should've pirated the movie off the internet and avoided the whole situation altogether.
If he's that afraid of people around him trying to kill him, he should probably permanently stop listening to the radio and the television.

Outspoken rocker Ted Nugent weighed in Wednesday on last week's mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., giving some colorful comments on both Twitter and radio.
Nugent began by suggesting that if a moviegoer had been carrying a "good gun," the tragedy might have played out differently.

(8,556 posts)Though they make news, mass random shootings are not very common. But toting guns in public for whatever reason is fairly common. So it's probably the former.
I remember when Blues Traveler frontman John Popper was pulled over with an arsenal in his car. I don't think anybody argued that he was on his way to commit a massacre. He was just driving around with tons of guns in his car for reasons I'm not clear on, but probably don't have anything to do with murdering random people in cold blood.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]This is why "if you see something, say something" is not insignificant or paranoid advice. Having security check a backpack because its owner is acting "oddly" can result in nothing or it can divert a potentially tragic course before it happens.

Any store that has to open up like that with all the guys standing outside with guns should think about closing down and starting up a different business.
