Fox News is concerned that America's athletes aren't wearing enough American flags, or piercing their noses with copies of the Constitution, or something. Republicans have a bit of a fetish for patriotic bling, but less so for patriotism itself. They love the flag, but don't particularly love what the flag stands for (they can't stand our system of government, particularly the judiciary, but really any branch that stands in their way). They claim to "love" the troops, but then when a service member runs for president they mock him for having received a purple heart (a medal he got for being wounded in battle and saving his fellow service members).
In other words, Republicans are much more into objects of democracy than democracy itself. It's why they're far more concerned about kids saying prayers in school than they are the same kid getting a school lunch, or keeping the kid away from automatic rifles (lest that interfere with the child's constitutional right to die in a meaningless blaze of gunfire at the movies).
So, to Fox, it doesn't matter that these athletes have given their all, since childhood, for this one chance to represent their country at the Olympics. That's not patriotism. What's patriotic is stopping by the local gun shop and buying a $2.00 flag pin along with your uzi, before heading home to beat your wife, and disown your kid for being gay.

Pretty much every thing that is wrong with this country is seen as good by fox, and their talking heads imo.

(22,336 posts)Remember when Aretha Franklin wore a hat to Obama's inauguration, and news people kept saying it wasn't part of "mainstream American culture." That means black Americans are outside of the mainstream = not completely American.
Then of course there are people who don't believe Obama was born in the US despite having access to his birth certificate. I think that's part of the same thing.
It pops up pretty often - various ways of saying that someone is not completely, fully, or "mainstream" American because they are not white. (Other races get this too.)

(15,953 posts)Where's NASA's patriotism? That should have been the first thing they put on it. How is anyone to know how great we are without the Stars & Stripes proudly flapping in the Martian breeze? We need at least 4 or 5 of them draped all over it. What's more important science or American pride?

(6,960 posts)... by 'built' I mean their athletic abilities.
I thought the Repuglican theme these days was that you didn't need the government or 'society' to be successful.
So, where does this notion come from that the Olympic athletes are competing for all of us instead of themselves?
Frankly, the nationalism is one of the more unsavory parts of the Olympics anyway. I thought that one of the Olympic ideals was to get athletes together to compete as fellow human beings and not as cogs in the machines of countries and governments (it's an 'ideal' because it has never happened and no one in the elite Olympic leadership seem very interested in that 'ideal').
But for Repuglicans to be worked up about patriotic uniforms so that they can vicariously participate in the athletic effort of others, is, well, typical hypocrisy.

Apparently right-wingers are the same around the world. If you don't look like me and speak with a 'funny' accent, it doesn't matter that you are a citizen you are not a 'real' American or Brit or whatever.

(2,940 posts)...where these two Fox airheads were dissing Gabby Douglas for wearing a hot pink body suit, because it was not red, white, and/or blue. One of them said something like, "how 'bout showing some patriotism when you're representing the US?"
In my head, Gabby was there, and she replied, "You want to see some patriotism? How about I go out there and win a gold medal for my country? Still not enough for you? Okay, then, I'll win two Olympic gold medals for the United States, which means I will twice stand on top of the podium, face the flag and sing the anthem. Is that patriotic enough for you jackasses!? When was the last time either of you did anything like that on behalf of your country?"

(4,242 posts)I just heard bits and pieces of the idiot's show. Everything he says is to titillate and elicit giggles from his racist, bigoted audience. Everything: his racist songs, parodies; so when he starts talking about Gabby's hair & how she wears it pulled back and then he attributes it to "well, that's what other's are saying" you know he's dog whistling. 'nuff said - Gabby is beautiful, accomplished, inspiring, and downright awesome. And Rush is a PIG.

(1,370 posts)What is the deal with "pulled back hair?" I don't get it. I don't understand Rush types at all (even though I'm too frequently surrounded by them) so I guess you'll have to tell me like I just landed on this planet.

(4,242 posts)made some nasty comments about Gabby's hair that he attributed to others. This is something he always does. He'll say, "I didn't say this, it's what people are saying." Thereby rendering himself an innocent reporter of events. And I know that he panders to racists and bigots, constantly mocking people of color & women. And that he uses dog whistle phrases regularly. I also know that Gabby herself said she was astounded at the critique of her hair.
And I do listen to Limbaugh as part of my social responsibility. I don't feel that evil doers & bullies should be ignored. Just like the Southern Poverty Center tracks the KKK and White Supremacists, I think we need to know what the evil people are up to.

(1,370 posts)I occasionally listen to Rush and Rush-wannabe's as a kind of program guide to what I can expect to hear from my brother-in-law and various other assorted assholes I am obligated to spend time on gratefully infrequent unhappy occasions - so I know what you're talking about, but usually the racism and ignorance is really blatant and easy to follow. When it's not, quite frankly it usually goes right over my head.
I TOTALLY fail to understand what could possibly be wrong with that young lady's hair. Don't ALL gymnasts normally wear their hair short or pulled back? I thought I was just being naive again. Good to know it's a mystery to others as well.
