to release a redacted copy of the first page of his returns showing only the bottom line where it shows how much he paid.

that someone he thinks is highly credible has made this claim about Romney's taxes.

Reid made it clear that he has no personal knowledge -- and the only one with the proof is Romney.

So they should just prove it to us. Have Romney release his returns. Easy.

But we will never figure out the truth until one of them shows their proof that the other is lying.

Why doesnt either Reid or Romney just prove the other one is lying to shut them up? If you have proof i dont want to hear about it i want to see it with my own eyes.

Or is that too much to ask?

In fact, he clearly said he didn't know -- just that he believed the guy who'd told him.

Reid never said he had the proof. He said a source, a very "credible source", told him that Romney had not paid any taxes for 10 years.

So why doesn't he give the name of the source? Would a reporter ever give a name of his source in a story like this? What if it is one of his fellow Senators who told him on the condition that he not give his name out under any circumstances?

What if it was someone in the McCain campaign? There were probably several people in McCain's campaign that would have known about Romney's returns or lack of returns but the 11th Commandment prohibits them from saying anything about a fellow Republican. No one has said anything? They have not said they have seen the returns. They have not said they did not see any returns? Just a little peculiar, don't you think?

Or it could be another Mormon/Bain insider.

I'm sure Romney has made plenty of enemies along the way.

Either one of them could prove the truth by showing what they have. I don't see why Harry Reid doesn't provide his proof, and I don't see why Romney won't provide his either.

him that he knew Romney hadn't paid taxes for all those years.

Reid made it very clear that he didn't know this for a fact.

Romney's the only one in a position to provide the proof.

Sun Aug 5, 2012, 05:38 PM
Aug 2012

If he doesn't have proof of what he claims, then maybe he's telling the truth and maybe he isn't.

I believe that Harry Reid knows something, but if he isn't able or willing to prove it, then calling him a liar is just political hardball, and part of the game.

Sun Aug 5, 2012, 05:30 PM

Someone may have asked him to keep his name out of it for many reasons. Or it may be someone who is a Mormon and who would get in trouble with the religious leaders. Any number of things. For example, journalists are not required to give information about their sources in order to protect their sources because the story is more important.

Of course Harry Reid is under no obligation to prove what he's claimed, but I certainly wouldn't tout proof of something unless I was willing and able to provide it.

I believe Harry Reid has seen something, but unless he's willing to divulge it, then he probably shouldn't have made the claim in the first place. Otherwise, it just looks like a bluff.

17. Reid never touted proof of anything. He said he BELIEVED
Sun Aug 5, 2012, 05:35 PM

someone else who claimed to have this knowledge. Reid specifically said he didn't know for sure, but he believes the Bain insider is credible.

Romney's the only one making categorical statements, and the only one capable of providing proof.

5. They want Harry Reid to prove what he knows
Sun Aug 5, 2012, 05:22 PM
Aug 2012

Because they want to know where he got his information. They want him to pull out a tax return so that they can change the subject, since, if he has a tax return, he would most likely have it as a result of an illegal act on the part of someone (not Reid, but whomever gave it to him or showed it to him).

If it's a lie, Romney should just show his returns to prove it's a lie. Simple.
