General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI saw Flaherty, Canadian conservative finance minister, being interviewed on the "Power &
Politics" end of year show. He stated clearly that in the 2008 recession they wanted to err on the side of caution and overstimulate the economy. He said it would be a really bad thing if they had understimulated it. He said it went fine. And the Conservatives did have a big spending plan. The deficit grew more than they had hoped. But nothing mattered more that spending the right amount. And this from conservative neocons.
Proves once again that the GOP is full of BS and they wanted the economy to tank under Obama so they could gain back power. Seems Canadian Conservatives, in a country that has a much better economic record than the USA, are Keynsians.

(3,491 posts)would have been happy to do nothing in 2008, but the fact is they had a minority Gov't. at that time and the other parties told them what they were going to do. Those parties; ie: Liberals, NDP, and Party Quebecois were giving the Conservatives an ultimatim if they did not want there Gov't, to fall with a No Confidence Vote.
PS:
I am so disappointed that Canadians gave this bunch of shit for brains a majority Gov't. , words do not do it. These F*ckers will probably destroy Canada in the next 4 years.

(118,462 posts)I do remember that both the Liberals and NDP were jumping up and down that fall. Thank god they did. But it still shows that there is something unique in why the GOP refuse any spending during this grave jobs crisis in the USA. We knew they were social engineers, trying to cut wages and continue a war on Obama, but we just have one more piece of proof. Conservatives in Canada are Keynsians.

(118,462 posts)getting rid of the long form census, putting the royal back in name of our armed forces, and soon the CBC, because the right wing press in Canada has been attacking the CBC for a few years. And they do things and give no reason.

(3,491 posts)as well. Granted, it has cost a good deal of money, but Law Enforcement think that this would be a disaster.

(5,604 posts)If it was that important it wouldn't still be sitting in the senate. I think a lot of Canadians across party lines actually wanted it to go, due to it's cost and the realization that criminals tend not to bother doing the paperwork.

In Harper's own words, ""Canada is content to become a second-tier socialist country boasting ever more loudly about its economy and social services to mask its second-rate status. You won't recognize Canada when I get through with it".
and this:
"America, and particularly your conservative movement, is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world" said during the bush regime.
Putting enough funds into a stimulus program was NOT the Cons idea, far from it. They were forced into it.
Even though 61% of Canadians did NOT vote for the rabid right wing party it matters not because Canada is a multi-party system, the 61% split 4 ways while the remaining 39% (the rabid right wing supporters) split not at all ergo the present majority rabid right wing government.

(5,604 posts)Thats pretty much how it went down. But just to add to it, Canadians still haven't received the memo about our own 'preventative' bank bail out, the bill for that one is still lost in the mail.
Also, if the world's economy goes into the shitter in 2012, our natural-resource export based economy go for a shit as well. Canada isn't in as good of shape as Canadians, and others think it is.

(3,491 posts)a leader that had a chance against Harper. Now how difficult would that have been? Apparently, it was much more difficult than the Liberals could muster. Ignatiff? Crap, this guy was a loser before he even began. He lived most of his years in the US and that commercial did him in many months before the actual election. I will tell you, that Canada is missing Jack Layton big time to counter Harper's bullshit. The Liberals need to get there collective head's out of there ass's if they want to have any chance of re-election in 4 years. I seriously don't think that Justin Trudeau is going to be their guy.

(5,604 posts)but I don't know about "Great Shape", (the global economy is largely smoke and mirrors and has been increasingly so for decades), but yes, a least not riding a wave of maple-santorum like it is now. Honestly I don't see Trudeau being the guy in 4 years either, maybe after that; if he really wants the job. I've paid a bit more attention to the NDP race lately, and I think that one is going to go to Mulclair, who could chew Harper to bits in a debate.

(118,462 posts)was that the GOP was being politically expedient in saying Keynsian economics doesn't work. Another example: Bush spent his way out of the 2001 recession with defense & military Keynsian spending.

(5,604 posts)I remember reading something years ago, that from when Canada confederated and up until the Depression, that the Conservatives were all about protectionism and trade barriers, while the liberals were the radical free-traders. Funny how the severe necessity of the depression ushered in Keynes and sanity for 50 years. Then Thatcher, Reagan, and Mulrooney drank the Friedman Kool-aid.
But I disagree a bit about Bush, he didn't spend his way out of anything, he just convinced everyone that everything was fine, and kicked the can down the road with nothing to show for it.
