It began as a parody of the Westboro Baptist Church...

A slogan commonly invoked at the counter protests is "God hates figs". Parodying the WBC all-capitals "God hates fags" signs, the counter-protest signs often invoke a passage in the Biblical book of Matthew to justify the claim about God and his feelings about figs. The signs have been noted at counter-protests at the University of Chicago;[155] in Spartanburg, South Carolina;[156] and in Portsmouth, New Hampshire,[157] as well as at the non-WBC-themed Rally to Restore Sanity.[158] The use of the signs has been invoked as a sign of sanity by the ACLU[159] and others.[158]

Perfectly innocent tree, doing its best, murdered because it couldn't bear fruit out of season.

AND, BTW, killing it did NOT get Jesus any fruit. So, a nasty, spoiled brat illogical pointless curse.

The fig, tree of knowledge in Eden, was Juno's tree. Bacchus' tree. The hieroglyph for woman was a figure with a basket of figs.

To "make the fig" is a highly sexual gesture in the region.

But the biggie is "pes" (pesh) in Sumerian. Because that word...aside from meaning "fig" and "fig tree" also means
2. to breathe
3. grandson
4. descendant
5. to give birth (to)
6. (to be) pregnant
7. pregnancy
8. to gather
9. (to be) thick
10. (to be) wide

and "three" which is the sacred number of Christianity.

Now why would the gospel writers want to mess with figs?

He shows up when figs aren't in season and of course there were no figs on the tree but he felt there should have been for him because he was so special so he cursed the tree.

Gee, I guess that means he really likes figs after all.

Just not that particular tree.

He's supposed to have made quite a few billion of us over the years.

Doesn't find a single one of us acceptable.

But he blames us and not himself!

I really do have to stop reading DU in public place on my blackberry. People are looking at me funny.

I never have understood that story about the fig tree. Never have found a satisfactory explanation of it anywhere.
