What did Dana Bash actually say about Reid's claim? (updated)

Last edited Fri Aug 3, 2012, 12:13 AM - Edit history (1)

Here's a transcript:

Bash: I did speak, have to tell you, I did speak to one source close to senator Reid that claims to also know who the Bain investor is that Sen. Reid spoke with, insists it is a credible person and this person if we knew the name we would understand they would have the authority and ability to know about Romney's tax returns. Whether we'll find it out ever, who knows.

Bash says she spoke to a source who "claims to also know who the bain investor is that Sen. Reid spoke with."

The comment does not say that Bash verified the claim, it simply states that another source verified the claim.

However you slice it, that's a second source, albeit one close to Senator Reid. It is still a source introduced by Bash.

Dana Bash (CNN) says her source can confirm Reid's tax allegation

Updated to add CNN transcript

<...>

DANA BASH, CNN SENIOR CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT: That's right. We now have a couple of responses, Anderson. Let me read you the first one, that is, "Senator Reid stands by his comments. Governor Romney's continued refusal to release his tax returns raises legitimate questions about what he is hiding and whether he paid any taxes at all. Governor Romney can easily end this debate by following the precedent set by his father and releasing his tax returns."

And as you were coming on the air, Anderson, I got a follow-up like the statement, which also stands by what they call his credible source that Romney has not paid taxes for 10 years, and he's calling Romney playing tricks, many tricks at his disposal for avoiding taxes. So not backing down at all.

<...>

But I did speak, I just have to tell you, that I did speak to one source who's very close to Senator Reid who claims to also know who this Bain investor is that Reid spoke with, and insists that this is a credible person and this person if we knew the name we would understand that they would have the authority and the ability to know about Romney's tax returns. Whether we'll find it out ever, who knows. But they're doing this on purpose so that this is the discussion.

2. And it's refreshing to see reporters acting like reporters on CNN

That's their job- uncover and then report on what is really going on here. Maybe some lessons were actually learned from the past? Years of Bush softballs? Iraq? Once can only hope.

3. so...a Bain investor. If he left in 2002, or 1999 - it would have to be tax years prior to that?

how would an investor know about his taxes after that?

4. FROM DAILY KOS: We've been had: Dana Bash Didn't Say That

by Attorney at Arms:

UPDATE: Just in case you can't read, this is NOT a diary criticizing Harry Reid. Go Harry! This is pointing out inaccurate information in another diary.

Anderson Cooper 360 ‏@AC360JUST IN: @DanaBashCNN receives a new statement from @SenatorReid's office, saying Senator #Reid has a "credible source." #Romney
This is HUGELY different than Bash having her own source confirm it. Actually, when you consider the whole thrust of the segment, it was Cooper trying to do a "both sides do it" on Reid and Bachmann et al. So if Bash had her own source it would have undermined the entire segment and would have made McCain's statement at the end look more stupid than CNN is willing to make St. McCain look.
There are dozens of links up on Twitter to this story. I hope it doesn't get to the front page or anywhere else, because we've been had.

All praise to Reid for keeping this alive, but there's no outside source confirmed by the media.

8:08 PM PT: Thanks to calidad below for posting the transcript.

8:10 PM PT: Just in case your curious or nitpicky like me: "a source close to Senator Reid" is not a source close to Romney, a source inside Bain, or the IRS, or whatever. It's a subtle distinction but it is critical.

5. That comment

"a source close to Senator Reid" is not a source close to Romney, a source inside Bain, or the IRS, or whatever. It's a subtle distinction but it is critical.

... is nonsense because no one is claiming that Bash spoke to source inside Bain.

6. Leading search headers on this story are referring to " Dana Bash's source ".

Its not 'her' source but a confirmation of Reid's source from what I gather. Its the same source.

7. Right,

"Leading search headers on this story are referring to 'Dana Bash's source.'"

Bash's source confirmed the existence of the Bain investor.

I mean, Bash could have simply reported that Reid's office is standing by its claim.

That's not what she did. She stated specifically that someone she spoke to knows the investor and can attest to the veracity of the claim.

Bash introduced a second person, other than Harry Reid, who says the investor exists.
