Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Thu Aug 2, 2012, 09:36 PM

Someone said " There are many paths to God" How many paths to DU? How did you get here?

I got here shortly after the coronation of GW. I had been following Buzzflash and they had an interesting link to DU that I followed and have been here ever since. If I counted the hours I've spent here every day I would probably sign up for some kind of rehab. None the less, although I have been politically active for most of my adult life and interact with oodles of like minded folks, I have never actually met anyone else who has heard of this place. It's easy when you spend a lot of time here to think that EVERYONE must belong but the fact is that this is a very small microcosim of the progressive people in this country. So, my question is, how did you get here. How did you stumble upon DU?

1. I was looking for a place with like minded people after the Kerry campaign ended

We hung out on the MIRC channel and the blog for a while, but eventually they shut down. Then I started reading DU every day and eventually made an account.

of left leaning democratic site. Just democratic was not getting me what I wanted, so finally I said, let's try underground ... so I did a search on democratic underground, and up came DU. I clicked around for a bit and said hey, this is really great, so here I am.

on another site and they made a reference to this site; as an insult so I went looking. I lurked for at least a year probably a little more. I didn't think I would fit in, everyone seemed so politically savvy. I mostly stayed at the other site and fought with the idiots and used this one as a resource and to learn. I think I read every thread and every comment with every link. LOL!

I'm so glad I found DU. I wish I had joined sooner.

20. Around March 2001 I could not believe there were not many others like me still angry over the 2000

election. I refused to recognize Bush* as the properly elected President, I could not believe the Supreme Court actually interfered with the recount, and I was totally furious that more Dems had not stood with Al Gore during the whole debacle. At that point, the press was silent on the issue (except for Bill Press on the Spin Room). So I started googling and discovered this site. I lurked for awhile, months actually, reading others' posts, but reading often that members knew there were many lurkers and kept asking them to jump in.

One day I was reading a thread that made me furious, so I signed up, jumped in and started verbally thrashing the DNC. Where were they, where were they, I kept "yelling." I was labeling them as spineless and every other thing I could think of, and I got the backlash of a lifetime from the flames I received. But I kept on, insisting that most of the Dems had been spineless in not speaking out against the whole debacle. It wasn't a matter of personal opinion regarding Gore, it was a failure to protect the Constitution.

Eventually, many here started coming around and agreeing that the Dems showed a tremendous lack of spine in leaving Gore basically by himself to withstand the Republicans' chronic lies and distortions.

So I have been here for a long time, used to be a lot more active in starting threads, had some incredible experiences, including receiving three marriage proposals in one thread one night following a terrible "fight"! and I wouldn't have missed the experience for the world.

The really awkward thing was my place of employment. I knew if it was discovered I was participating at this site I would lose my job. So I became very protective of my private world for a number of years until I left that arena in 2008. Now I am an open political book!

Sam

There was many members of that forum who were also DUers and they'd post links at the Kerry forum to threads here at DU. I lost interest in politics after the 2004 election but got interested again during the 2008 primary and I came here and joined.

29. I had to find like-minds to help pull me out of the doldrums after King George was reelected...

I believe the first thing I found was the article about the BFEE, which made me realize my imagination was not going off the deep end, but that there were reasons why that ignorant clan kept ending up in the White House.

It is my go-to place first thing in the morning for the latest news/scandals. It helps that so many posts are backed up with documentation. I appreciate the help other DUrs have given me over the years...some have SO much information stored away or an awfully good memory. I am impressed.

One of my kids commented the other day on an obituary and how long the list was for the deceased as far as memberships...even associations that were no longer in existence. I told them they'd have to list the Democratic Underground as one of my memberships and then sit back and listen to the gossip..."Psst, did you see she was a member of the Democratic Underground? I had no idea!"

40. I'm...coming...out...

I first saw a link to DU on the old Buzzflash. It was a link to Top 10 Conservative Idiots. It was probably July, 2001. I hit the link, and joined immediately. My screen name at that time was "markses." I posted under that screen name for probably two years (say, 2001-2003). I posted on 9/11 on DU after just having walked over the Brooklyn bridge from Lower Manhattan. I went back and forth with kephra, Will Pitt. Back in the days. Posted a long critique of the film Gladiator, cuz Will Pitt used to use one of its catchlines. There was, if I remember correctly, a poster named sarahcat who I was always fighting with. So many other good folks, come and gone. Who was that hard lefty teacher from Texas with the two little boys. Oh, we used to go head-to-head with the anti-Green Party people, and now I'm probably considered one of them! Beating up on J. Carlos Jiacinto. Oh, Lawdy. Before the Iraq War - well before. We all grow up, times change. Goddamn how have I forgotten? Hard to believe it was more than a decade ago. I joined again with the screen name "onemore." Obviously, there would be more than one more. That went through 2005, when I joined again with this current screen name, now more than seven years old (what? how can that be?).

So, I joined this community in summer of 2001, before the whole world went off its hinges, and I've been traveling through here ever since.

You guys are awesome. I'm still the same asshole I always was...

57. I used to post on a sceptics site dominated by right wing Americans

and while I agreed with them about things like homeopathy, I always had to argue that global warming is real and man-made, while they were deciding to ignore the vast majority of scientists on the subject. They occasionally linked to DU to laugh at something, and when I looked here, I found that the vast majority of DU was sensible, empathetic, and right about the Iraq war (the nominally 'sceptic' site still had plenty of RWers claiming they were finding WMD after the invasion). So I started getting decent conversations here instead.

Was just browsing their list of contributors, clicked on DU, and got hooked. That was in 2004. I have really low posts because I have been a reader not a commenter all these years I think I have learned more from DU than from anywhere else! I especially love the breaking news. One time I called my Senator's office to comment on a vote they had just taken and they didn't even know about it yet! I hate to admit how much time I spend reading articles on here. So when Kerry lost, I had a support group right there to help me in our mutual grieving process. Early 2005 was very tough emotionally. DU was my security blanket along with Stephanie Miller and the mooks, Al Franken's AA show, Big Eddie and Randi Rhodes. Strangely, I did not care for Rachel on her radio show and now I adore her.

I tried other Democratic websites but nothing "clicked" the way DU did. I have been here ever since...

65. Phil Parlock

I was on the Air America boards when DUers exposed Philip Parlock.

He claimed that Democratic thugs harassed him and his little girl, but he staged it all and similar other incidents.

(See Idiot #4: http://www.democraticunderground.com/top10/04/171.html)

I came to DU to check that out and never left. Don't know how I survived most of Bush's first term without DU.

68. 2001... link on buzzflash... police investigate a post calling W Captain Bunnypants

I think Archae was the author of the story.

It was November or December. Tried to join... didn't get it to work. Forgot about it for a couple of weeks. Found the site again and joined in the first couple of days of January 2002.

70. I was posting on Democrats.com, and there was a cross post from DU about

Black Box (electronic) Voting.

So I checked out DU and have been posting here on and off ever since.

71. Frequented another site on a regular basis but

my dear friend said DU was better. She nagged until I was hooked. She's a prolific poster -- me, not so much.

72. Bartcop

Back in the day:

smirkingchimp.com
indymedia.org
commondreams.org

But before all that, I was a news "square" as opposed to the "junkie" I became. Said square went looking for Drudge Report.
I had actually used and bookmarked Drudge's dad's site first, Refdesk.com.
Typed in "drudge.com" got the phantom site called Drudge Retort that sent me to michaelmoore.com and joeconason.com.
Found Bartcop.com, became UH-DICTED. Clicked every link on his site for two years to build his traffic. Even drank Chinaco.
Came to DU to check the Latest. Stayed for the personalities and rants. (Props to Octafish and nostamj kephra distressedamerican rbham pun pirate swamprat takebackthemedia)
Later learned what a picpost was. Became a practicing member of the Lounge.
Can't find anything else quite like it anywhere. Why look?
Still haven't seen FreeRepublic.
