Reid: 'Extremely credible source' said Romney didn't pay taxes for decade

By MANU RAJU

<...>

In a statement Thursday night responding to criticism, Reid said he was told by an "extremely credible source" Romney didn't pay taxes for a decade, and that the nominee is "hiding something" by refusing to release more tax returns.

Here's Reid's full statement:

"There is a controversy because the Republican presidential nominee, Governor Mitt Romney, refuses to release his tax returns. As I said before, I was told by an extremely credible source that Romney has not paid taxes for ten years. People who make as much money as Mitt Romney have many tricks at their disposal to avoid paying taxes. We already know that Romney has exploited many of these loopholes, stashing his money in secret, overseas accounts in places like Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

“Last weekend, Governor Romney promised that he would check his tax returns and let the American people know whether he ever paid a rate lower than 13.9 percent. One day later, his campaign raced to say he had no intention of putting out any further information.

“When it comes to answering the legitimate questions the American people have about whether he avoided paying his fair share in taxes or why he opened a Swiss bank account, Romney has shut up. But as a presidential candidate, it’s his obligation to put up, and release several years’ worth of tax returns just like nominees of both parties have done for decades.

“It’s clear Romney is hiding something, and the American people deserve to know what it is. Whatever Romney’s hiding probably speaks volumes about how he would approach issues that directly impact middle-class families, like tax reform and the economy. When you are running for president, you should be an open book.

“I understand Romney is concerned that many people, Democrats and Republicans, have been calling on him to release his tax returns. He has so far refused. There is only one thing he can do to clear this up, and that’s release his tax returns.”

CNN's Dana Bash: Her source can confirm Reid's Romney tax allegation (Update)

by rem123

Tonight on CNN AC360, Anderson Copper opened his 'keeping them honest' segment with Sen. Harry Reid's recent tax allegation about Mitt Romney.

Cooper had CNN Capitol Hill reporter, Dana Bash on to discuss the story, according to Bash, her source can confirm Sen. Reid's allegation. Bash went even further, she said this source also personally knows the Bain source who would have access to Romney's tax record. If this Bain source story is true, then, Mitt Romney is in serious trouble. I'll have more later.

Update @Dana Bash tweets

Also, the Daily Kos piece now includes a clip of Begala's exchange with Cooper.

From the comments the comments.

I was very disappointed in the segment.

Anderson Cooper compared Reid's allegation to the "Terror Babies" Louis Gohmert bit. That was AFTER Dana told him she had a secondary source that confirmed Reid's story and the Bain source. She pretty much stated that there would be no question the integrity of the source if we were to know who it was.

Anderson Cooper compared Reid to Louie Gohmert

and the Republican lunatics in congress.

Paul Begala kinda smacked him down, but AC kept at it with the false equivalency bullshit, taking Mary Matalin's side.

2. Reid's smart enough that he wouldn't go forward with this kind of accusation...

Unless he indeed knew he could back it up.

He knows perfectly well that if he was bluffing, the Republicans would call him out.

So excuse me while I entertain myself by watching Rmoney and the GOP self-immolate...

8. He did it with a prosecutor's finesse, too.

He didn't say he knew that Romney didn't pay taxes. He specifically said that he didn't know himself, but that a guy who should know told him that Romney didn't pay taxes.

That might be hearsay in court, but in front of the cameras, it is bait. It focuses the attention of the press on finding Reid's source, rather than inviting the usual flying monkeys to come forward on television and slander Reid himself.

He forced the media to act responsibly, for once, by offering it as an open question rather than as a statement.

And I don't see the usual suspects crawling out of the woodwork to defend Romney, either. Not looking good for him.

someone involved in the McCain campaign? They saw Mittens' tax returns, after all...

12. Wouldn't that be juicy?

McCain ostensibly supports Mittens, but he's a bitter old SOB and I wouldn't put it past him to kneecap Mittens just to make his own defeat look less embarrassing.

10. Be careful. Trust but verify. Wouldn't be the first time false information was floated in order

to let the opposition go out on a limb only to remove the issue and the opposition when the limb breaks.

Can't let the worst candidate ever be resurrected by trickery and by letting all his faults be distilled down, in the media, to whether or not he paid a certain rate of taxes. He has far too many flaws and undesirable traits for the discussion to just come down to his tax rates that we really don't know anything about yet.

This feels too familiar.

Talk about his taxes, but in the context of his corporate raider career, his lying, his arrogance, his disconnectedness, his employment record, his 1% policies, his overseas accounts, and of the overall issue of tax fairness. It's really not ALL about his federal income tax or capital gains rate.

They don't have ANY of the issues...the only things they have are dishonesty, misinformation, tricks, voter supression, polarization, and propaganda combined with media consolidation/bias and a willingness to do anything to control the votes of their base.

13. It's still

"Be careful. Trust but verify. Wouldn't be the first time false information was floated in order"

...on Romney to release his returns.

The people trying to shield Romney seem to be under the impression that the demand for Romney to release his returns is about Romney vs. Reid.

Reid could be lying, that his credibility.

Romney has to answer to the American people.

17. I'm for Romney releasing more info....but if you watch the news it's practically the

only issue that gets any play. Pundits and dem leaders should mention returns and express dismay and astonishment at the lack of transparency...and I'm fine with pundits even out loud assuming the WORST from his returns....but I want them to acknowledge that there are many more important campaign issues to talk about and then fight on the issues.

Eggs in one basket = risk

18. I'd think that Reid would be smart enough to anticipate such a trap.

If I were Reid, I wouldn't make such accusations unless I had iron-clad proof, because the blowback from making such an accusation if it turns out to be false is pretty obvious.

15. If there is a source, Reid has nothing to worry about...

And I think there is a source.

The pickle would be between Romney and the source, not Reid. He is only reporting what he has heard or has been told. He doesn't have a lot at risk in this story actually.
