Reid doubles down on Romney tax chrage
Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) not only stuck by his story of a Bain Capital investor claiming Mitt Romney paid no taxes at all for 10 years, he broadened it in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal and other reporters.
Said Reid: "I am not basing this on some figment of my imagination. I have had a number of people tell me that." When asked to identify his sources, Reid declined: "No, that's the best you're going to get from me. I don't think the burden should be on me. The burden should be on him. He's the one I've alleged has not paid any taxes. Why didn't he release his tax returns?" http://politicalwire.com/archives/2012/08/02/reid_doubles_down_on_romney_tax_charge.html

1. Reid seems far to cautious a man to say this if he thought it wasn't true
|
Especially since if it wasn't true it could easily be proven.

Not an uppercut ... more like a body blow. Upper cuts are knock-out punches; body shots are to set up the upper-cut.

All he's said is that he heard some hearsay and he'd like to know whether it's true. Reid obviously can't clear up that truth thing himself. But Romney could

Reid would not out and out lie. And what other conclusion can we draw from Mitt's refusing to show his taxes? Jerk didn't pay his fair share and he can't justify that in the court of public opinion.

8. Is it 'Uranium from Africa' or does Reid know something?
|
Bush cited British Intelligence for his assertion about Saddam's quest for yellowcake in order to press the point without being responsible for the ultimate truth (or falsehood) of the matter.
If Reid is doing the same thing then it's a cheap trick that works but I don't want my elected officials using such tricks against each other because it makes it more likely that they'll use them against us. I'd like to think that Reid has good reasons to think this is true and if so, it's a strategy that works. Either way, Mitt is in a box on this. I hope that the rest of us are not in it as well. |

18. Well the stakes are a bit different here...
|
...while in one case you had a president who was bound determined to careen into a war and would do anything to get us into it, vs. a politician who wants to leverage an issue (Mitt not revealing his tax returns) to his own party's political advantage.
Second, the yellow cake thing was indeed an entire fabrication, created by the Bush administration for a certain purpose, which purpose it served nicely. Whereas, the Mitt tax thing is an issue of Mitt's own making, by his refusal to release his returns. Reid is just using the issue, and using it very well I might add. In any case, as others have pointed out, Harry Reid is typically a very cautious man. For that reason, it seems unlikely he would make this up. It's a pretty serious charge (not serious legally, but politically) and is a very definite thing. Not, "Oh, I've been told he has something to hide", but rather specifically "I've been told he paid no taxes in those years". My gut says to go with Harry on this one. |

25. Huge Difference
|
When Bush made that claim internal intelligence was saying the supporting document was a fake. They later admitted that the claim should not have been left in the speech.
Here Reid is not making an absolute claim because none of his sources from Bain have said they saw Romney's tax returns but that the claim of Romney not paying taxes for 10 years was widely circulated at the time. Translation: Romney boasted to Bain insiders that he paid no federal income taxes for several years. |

Is that I trust Harry Reid, for many reasons, especially because he has never done this before. He has no record of anything like this. You have to figure that LDS ties did not bind his statement. so either Harry figures that it is a big thing. I trust Harry Reid and I certainly do not trust Mittens |

Romney hides the crap he says by saying he didn't say it one of his proxies did, either an aide or his wife. Or, he will say the British press is flat out lying even if they have no motive for doing so. Reid is doing what anyone who isn't a coward will do, he is flat out saying what he has heard. Reid is calling Romney out without the shield of a proxy.

I think Romney fails to see it is HE who needs to put up or shut up. If you paid "a lot of taxes" as you claimed this morning, let's see the returns.
