This year's traditional Nebraska State Fair debate between the candidates vying to be the state's next U.S. senator will focus on how policies set in Washington affect rural residents.

The World-Herald, the Grand Island Independent, RFD-TV and Rural TV are sponsoring the 90-minute debate between Republican Deb Fischer and Democrat Bob Kerrey.

It is scheduled for 4 p.m. Aug. 25, during the opening weekend of the State Fair in Grand Island. Anyone with fair tickets for the day can attend the debate at the Heartland Events Center.

Major party Senate and gubernatorial candidates have participated in State Fair debates off and on since 1982. Next month's event will restart a tradition, said World-Herald Managing Editor C. David Kotok.
