Where would the GOP be without the abortion, gay rights, 2nd Amendment, and racism as their issues?

In my opinion, they would be irrelevant. They have to be against certain issues in order to survive as a Party.

Of course, they would say the same about women issues, civil rights, welfare, and Social Security on our side of the issues. However, I don't think the choice is a difficult one?

1. You forgot about the military/defense and welfare for the rich

They are always wailing about the need to spend more on defense.

Don't forget their incessant fighting for tax cuts for the "job creators".

2. They need those issues to keep their base riled up so they don't notice

how badly they're being screwed by Republicans.

3. Oh, they could still be obsessed with destroying public services and kicking poor people and

sick people! Our Tory party, though it includes some religious right-wingers, is not at its top level preoccupied with banning abortion; Cameron actually supports gay marriage; we don't have a 2nd Amendment or much of a gun culture; and racism certainly exists but is not made very explicit at the top level of the Tory party. However, HATING poor people, unions, the public sector, and benefit claimants is the big driving force of the party, and I suspect it would be for the Republcans too even if they didn't have the other issues.

6. Interesting Brit...

It seems that the right wing in this country follows the right wing in your country. Just this year, the conservatives have started attacking unions and the public sector. I think Britain is a roadmap for American conservatism.

4. The Second Amendment is not "their issue" anymore

One of the biggest drawbacks of the Democratic Party over the last 40 years was to allow the Republicans to run with Second Amendment issues, even when their own legislators tried to whittle away chunks of it. Ever since 2005, however, an increasing number of Democrats have started taking a more measured approach to gun issues, and while the debate isn't over yet, they now have some key Supreme Court rulings to consider as well.

The more we take the Second Amendment away from Republicans and claim it as our own, the more we as a party win. So please forgive me if I'm a bit stubborn about holding onto my Kalashnikov - believe it or not, I'm on your side.

9. It would be easy to take away the 2nd Amendment issue

by being more receptive to gun owners. Gun ownership is not a partisan issue.

10. Without the hateful, divisive issues you mention, the GOP is nothing but an empty vessel...

...and they know this all too well. This is why logic, reason, compassion and compromise ARE NOT rethuglican values.

11. Largely dead and buried.

Their only remaining constituency would be the plutocracy and the MIC.
