Reading his book, "The City and the Pillar" when I was 18 literally changed my life. I have since read all of his books (I think!) and enjoyed every one of them. "Julian" and "Burr" are major masterpieces, in my opinion, and his autobiography, "Palimpsest," is amazing, witty, wicked, and warm. There is nobody to take Mr. Vidal's place, alas.
