The Libertarian Con: Favorite 'Rebel' Ideology of the Ruling Class

http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/libertarian-con-favorite-rebel-ideology-ruling-class

Calling yourself a libertarian today is a lot like wearing a mullet back in the 1980s. It sends a clear signal: business up front, party in the back. You know, those guys who call themselves “socially liberal but fiscally conservative.” Yeah. It’s for them.

Today, the ruling class knows that they’ve lost the culture wars. And unlike with our parents, they can’t count on weeping eagles and the stars ‘n bars to get us to fall in line. So libertarianism is a last-ditch effort to ensure a succession to their throne. Their hope is that the kids will nod along as wealthy elites spread austerity regimes across the world.

Just look at how they play up libertarianism as the “cool” alternative to traditional button-down conservatism. While the classic GOP crowd still sports the blue blazer and red tie, the coastal libertarians are black-leather-jacket-wearing badasses. George Will wore a bowtie. Reason magazine’s Nick Gillespie wears an ironic D.A.R.E. T-shirt.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that they want to make “libertarianism” shorthand for “the politically disaffected.” Now there’s a demographic with some growth potential. Writing about how “the kids have gone Galt” is practically its own genre these days.

1. George Bush made Republican a dirty word.

I personally know of people who voted for Bush -- twice -- who now claim to barely remember his name. They insist they're "Libertarian." But not a one of the could name a single Libertarian candidate other than maybe kinda Ron Paul.

2. Without Ron and Rand Paul, there would be NO Libertarian movement.

My sister-in-law in KY is a self proclaimed Libertarian. She is married to a helo pilot who got shot in the head in the Vietnam war and receives 100% disability. While she proclaims government is the enemy, her children go to college for free, on the government's dime. While she's all for making a big profit off the sick and dieing, she and her children get medical care from the government.

She hates big government but lives off of it and she does not see the hypocrisy.

4. Who are "they"? in this sentence

"Just look at how they play up libertarianism as the “cool”". Libertarians are not played up as cool, they are laughed at just about everywhere that is not the internet. Hence the reason why they all hang out on youtube comments and blogs.

Libertarianism is going to mean less war, less DoD spending and I can tell you one thing, the DoD would not like it.

5. Libertarianism is nothing but stale Reagan bongwater minus Teh Jesus.

I really wouldn't mind if they were only about social issues. But then they start talking economics . . . and what's the difference between them and R-Money or the other whacknuts he tripped over? NOTHING!!!
