BY CARL GOLDEN
COMMENTARY
In the summer and fall of 1993, I served as press secretary for the gubernatorial campaign of Christie Whitman. Anyone who was around then will recall the issue virtually the only issue that year was the $2.8 billion income and sales tax increase signed into law three years previously by Gov. Jim Florio.
But, just as Mitt Romney has been knocked off balance and off message by demands he release more than 10 years of his personal income tax returns, the Whitman campaign was thrust into the center of political and media turmoil after the candidate and her husband released three years of returns, but withheld one year.
That one year became the focus of the Florio campaign and from reporters whod heard enough about tax increases and demanded to know what was in the return the Whitmans refused to release.
Her campaign consultant was Ed Rollins, a battle hardened veteran of political battles, including serving as President Reagans campaign manager in 1984.

OP
Aside from the low taxes / no taxes paid, his returns might reveal voting fraud.

Because the returns would probably show a legal address in California during the time he was voting in Massachusetts. Not even the low-information Fox news millionaire-wannabes could forgive that.

(82,383 posts)3. An interesting thought:
What about State returns? Maybe they don't have the same level of confidentiality. It'd be interesting to see what states Mittwit filed in. If he filed no MA return while claiming to live there, it could get interesting.

that could have put him over. SIXTY-ONE percent of independent voters want to see those returns.
