Day Eleven of "No More Tax Records"

Day Eleven of "No More Tax Records"
By Just_The_Truth
Drip-drip-drip. Every day he stiff-arms the American public is more acid on his run for the presidency.

Yes, we all know that W. Mitt Romney is rich. We know that. Releasing his returns may open him up to some specific criticism but if he releases his records and the revelations are limited to just more evidence that Romney is rich and pays only the taxes he legally owes -- even if he used some fancy tricks like Swiss accounts -- then this whole thing would blow over very quickly.

The only reasons he may have for not releasing his returns in this political environment is a desire for privacy or to conceal something in those records that goes well beyond more evidence that Romney is a very, very rich man who is careful with his money.

If the motivation is privacy you have to wonder why he decided to run for president. I mean, c'mon! This pressure to release his records is a surprise? No way. Maybe he naïvely thought "us people" could be eventually satisfied by what he and his wife deign to release. But it's not turning out that way. So maybe he misunderestimated the pressure. If so that calls into question his capacity to lead the country.

If his motivation is to conceal real issues then you have to wonder why the man thought he could get elected. He must have known that he would either be forced to unveil these issues or suffer such political pressure that a run for the presidency was ill conceived. Either way it's bad. And because of the possibility that there's something bad hidden in those records the pressure for him to release should not let up until he does or he's defeated at the polls.

Yes, Romney is a rich man. The accompanying charts illustrate just how wealthy he is compared to the men he would dearly like to call his peers. But that's not what this is about. It's about the core question: Does W. Mitt Romney have the honesty and integrity we want and need in the White House? Only if he reveals his tax records for tax year 2009 and back a few years can we know for sure. Otherwise, there's doubt. A LOT of doubt.

Would you vote for someone for this office with this level of doubt?

I was thinking how Mitt's British flap successfully distracted from this topic. zonkers Jul 2012 #1
