1. The AR15 has been the most popular rifle in

 

America for a number of years now. Dozens of companies make them and they fly off shelves. Its not surprising one would be auctioned.

5. Probably planned well before the theater shooting in Aurora

No indication the NRA had a hand in this.

That said, it will do what he wants, get press/publicity and cement the view that he stands with gun owners. For him it is a winning approach though it clearly would not play well in most of CA or New York.
