Guns, no guns. Meds, no meds. Two of the wildest discussions on this board if you ask me.

I take meds for depression, anxiety and ADHD just for the record.

I haven't purchased any guns or rifles in the last six months nor a couple of thousand rounds either. I've taken meds since 1994. I've had some type of depression all my life and ADHD all my life.

Maybe James Holmes would not have done what he did had he been taking meds. We will never know.

We don't know anything about his medications or lack of medications.

I posted yesterday that maybe we should combine treating mental illness along with gun ownership restrictions and got the usual pro gun snark.

Listening to President Obama's speech yesterday I learned that he agrees with me. I'm sure we will get new gun ownership restrictions but will we get more treatment for mental illness?

Not if we let non professionals tell us that meds cause the problem and can't help it. That kind of talk is like any other talk that keeps mental illness a misunderstood and a taboo subject and does our society no good.

There are many ways to treat mental illness and one size does not fit all. We should let people trained to treat mental illness work with people and together they can find what works best for them.
