Random question about Alan Colmes' radio show

So, I never post here, but I've been a long-time watcher of the forums here. Because Google didn't turn up anything, I figured I could get some answer here because I would assume at least some DU'ers here have listened to his radio show.

Every now and then, a caller on his radio show will be interrupted by a pre-canned sound of a dog growling, and will proceed to say, are you there, and then the conversation will go on as usual, and Alan never explains this.

Does anyone know what the heck that is all about?

There are several things that irritate the host ... such as "Hey, how you doing tonight?", and "Thanks for taking my call" which, while polite, just add noise and use up valuable time. He prefers that you just get to your comments - after all, that's why you called.

Those kinds of things will lead often to growls of various kinds in the background.
